Higher use MySQL database host?

I'm looking for some suggestions for a host where MySQL connections aren't quickly killed off like with many budget providers.

I have an SMF forum and for it to run I need for a greater use of MySQL connections.

I'm with Host Gator for the site at the moment, and have previously used Reseller Zoom.

There are hosts that offer high connection limits but don't let that full you. MySQL = CPU and RAM usage. You will be limited on shared hosting. Having said that, you can get better performance from some hosts.

Maybe it is time to get a VPS instead? Shared + high traffic/resource-usage sites not always go together.

I'd rather not go down the VPS route. I'd rather it was all done for me

It's only something I really need for a month or two, as I am looking to sell the forum but want to make sure it works properly as part of that.

Try using CloudFlare. It's free.

How many concurrent users do you get? (Users online at the same time ... its a stat in the footer).

In very general terms, most shared hosts will tell you that when you have from 30 to 40 concurrent users it is time to upgrade. I was running that many fine on my previous host, Dathorn.com (a reseller host, so if its for a single site that may not be appropriate). His servers had lite-speed installed and that did help quite a bit. I ran into trouble when I wanted to convert the SMF forum to a IPBoard forum (the shared environment would not support the conversion process).

Based on the concurrent users, you can ask hosts if they think your forum will run fine on their servers. If you are at or below that level, you should have no problem on many, many hosts, including the host I have now, MDDHosting.com (I don't have a shared account with MDDHosting, but a VPS, so I can really only recommend them based on service and support ... but the customers on their shared accounts seem happy with the service).

Yes, I suggest vps as well since a shared hosting would not be enough to support a heavy forum. You can control over everythign with a VPS server.

If you have more concurrent connections, you must go for a dedicated server, even host gator has some limit on number of connections and inodes etc.

If that is the case, a fully managed VPS might be the answer.

There are also some higher resource usage hosting companies here at WHT, just do a search.
