    Seagate SAS 15K RAID10 , Adaptec 2405 or Adpatec 5405?

We try to make a SAS 15K x4 on RAID10
will we see a lot performance increase by using Adaptec 5405?

I am wondering this because I read some posts on WHT saying that for RAID10, even software RAID is enough

This is my personal opinion, if your doing any type of raid you should use a dedicated raid card instead of software raid. If you have the cash to pay for 15K SAS drives these RAID cards aren't that expensive.

I'd go with the 5405 with a battery backup. The 2405 doesn't have that option.

Exactly - that's the logic I would use here.

We use a lot of 2405 (write cache disabled). If you're going to spend 5405 sort of cash, why not look at the cards that support the ZMM rather than BBU.

2405 is an excellend RAID10 performer and when compared to the 5405 without BBU you'll see no difference really. Adding the BBU makes the comparison apples to oranges.

Believe these are the right parts (about the same price as 5405 with bbu):

    ZMM: http://www.provantage.com/adaptec-22...r~7ADPR03N.htm

yea, I just found out adaptec 6405 as we are going to use new seagate 600G SAS15K 6G/s and 6405 is almos same price as 5405

But, Gordon, 5405 is only $336

Yes 5405 and 6405 are about the same price ($300-$330). 5405 does NOT come with BBU, 6405 does NOT come with ZMM.

we have a server with SATA x4 RAID10 + adaptec 2405 on production
I also feel that "write cahe" is not so important on shared hosting, but IOP is?

We have load 600G data on sata raid10 , site is still fast, but when listing account on cpanel/WHM, suspend account ...etc system pretty much hangs, maybe due to too many data to seek?

I agree, the 2405 rules on sata configurations. Though I will probably go with the 5405 for sas or ssd configurations.

Be advised, most 5405 controllers don't include the bbu, it costs around $130 ish. Making the 5405 at $450 big ones. Thus the 2405 is cheaper and you probably won't notice much difference, though I wouldn't put more than 2 arrays on that card.

The 5405 is a waste of money on sata configurations imo.

be aware that there exists none of adaptec 6405/6805 working drivers for any of RHEL/CentOS production releases. not in 5.6/6.0 stock kernels nor the "linux dd" driver suppplied by Adaptec will work.

i've been watching adaptec support site for weeks now and seen none. we will love to dump all 5405/5805 card and go all 6405/6805 with ZMM (4G NAND flash and costs less than 5405/5805 +BBU!), but it doesn't seem that Adaptec cares too much about it! what's wrong with these folks?

I randomly googled, someone said we have to install centos 5.4 first and install adaptec drive and yum update, but I guess it is still not working?

never did try centos 5.4 with linux dd driver by adaptec. that's bit crazy thing to do, but you may not have a choice than trying it if you want 6xxx series to work on your linux kit, I guess.

What Linux works with 6xxx series?
Any ETA to 5.6/6.0 RHEL drives release?

How does the 5405Z compare to the 6405 with the ZMM? They both seem to feature zero maintenance but the 6405 with ZMM add-on is significantly cheaper. The only caveat, at the moment, is the 6405 doesn't play well on CentOS.
