Well thats a good config for VPS, but you need to consider how many containers are you going to have and what virtualization technology.
But yes, you can start from there.

Yes, the main dedicated server would be more than enough for starting up you're hosting company. You'll also want to consider if you're virtual machines are going to use dedicated resources, share resources, and having a business plan on what you're server can and can't handle.
Both servers should have no problems running you're servers.

X3430 has the higher clock speed, but lower cache. Also the X3430 only has 4 threads vs 8 threads on the L5630. So it's a toss up between maximum clock speed vs number of threads, probably most users would choose the L5630. However if a X3440 is also on offer (instead of X3430) I'd choose the X3440 (as it has 8 threads and higher clock than the L5630).
As for RAID5 vs RAID10 most of our clients go for RAID10 for VPS hosting for best performance.
For both providers that you are considering check the following:
- hot swap drives?
- enterprise drives? e.g. re4
- hardware RAID (not software RAID and not "onboard" RAID)
- dedicated IPMI/KVM (you'll want this to manage the server remotely when you lock yourself out)

Hi,thanks for your answers. Currently for shared hosting i am using xeon3430 with 8gb ram and the server is located in eu datacenter. Now i want to start VPS hosting and need to decide between xeon3430/3440 or L5630. Current xeon3430 is very good for share accounts but what about VPS accounts? I only need stable server with good performance. I never use L5630 before. If you know better servers for VPS please tell me ,i only want good for my clients.
One more thing what virtualization technology you can suggest for those servers?

X3340 is better than the X3430. X3440 is probably also better than a single L5630 for your use case. L5630 would only be better if there were dual CPUs. I suggest the X3440 out of all those single CPU options.
As for which technology to use for your VMs, I can't comment maybe someone else will.

I'm afraid that system quoted in the original thread is not powerful enough. You need at least 2xCPU and more RAM. I'd not suggest you to host more than 10 - 15 VPSs on the server as it is suggested, not matter whihc processor you choose.

Hi ,this l5630 is dual and 3430 is quad core . I think to take couple of 3440 and host only 15 VPSs but is that too expensive? Only 15 VPSs? I dont know..

No. L5630 is a quad core processor, but can be setup with dual processors.
So (in order of what I personally think is best):
2x L5630 = 8 cores = 16 threads (this is called "Dual CPU")
1x X3440 = 4 cores = 8 threads
1x L5630 = 4 cores = 8 threads
1x X3430 = 4 cores = 4 threads (no HT on this proc)
L5630 spec:
Clock Speed
2.13 GHz
Max Turbo Frequency
2.4 GHz
X3440 spec:
Clock Speed
2.53 GHz
Max Turbo Frequency
2.93 GHz
X3430 spec:
Clock Speed
2.4 GHz
Max Turbo Frequency
2.8 GHz
How many VPS you run on a machine comes down to the market you are targeting. We have a lot of clients running X3440 with RAID10 and 24-32GB RAM. Common feedback received is that they thought they would need more CPU, but that RAM and IO are typically first to be of a concern. Yes Dual CPUs is better, but at a cost. You have to figure out your market.

what you think about this dedicated server:
Intel® Core™ i7-920 Quadcore
incl. Hyper-Threading Technology
RAM 24 GB DDR3 RAM
Hard discs 2 x 1500 GB SATA-II HDD
Software-RAID 1

I think you're going backwards. You've just presumably gone from ECC RAM and hot swap drives to desktop quality components.
Personally I think the following are critical (or at least highly desirable) for a decent VPS node:
- ECC RAM
- Hot swap drives
- Hardware RAID
RAID1 is going to perform a LOT worse than RAID10 for a VPS host.Last edited by gordonrp; 05-19-2011 at 05:07 PM.

Hi All, looking for an Australian hosting provider to replace what i'm currently using. currently using Siteground and they are okay but many of my clients baulk at an offshore host. They say that if some disaster were to happen they would have more comfort in knowing the host was in Australia and more accessible. I think i will need a second option for such customers. I don't want to host myself, rather use a third party but must be Australia Company with similar service to Siteground (or better). Thanks.

What disaster my friend? The end of the world?
