What do you use or have you seen most commonly used in vps nodes? The rest of the specs of the server would be:
- 16GB DDR3 ECC Ram
- 4 x 500gb WD RE4 Raid Class Drives
- Adaptec 2405 Raid Card

Please don't use SATA drives for vps nodes. Use sas drives.

Those drives should be able to run VPSes, it depends on your needs if SAS is better.
The choice of CPU depends on what you want to do with it. For an average VPS node dual quad E5630 can do the job, but when you're going to run heavy stuff on it you perhaps needs a more powerfull CPU.

The bare min would be a Quad Core W/HT...
What kind of budget do you have for the processor side of the build?

I would look at a Dual Xeon e5620 fairly good price, dual quad cores with HT.

Another item to consider is do you want to run big nodes with lots of clients or do you want to run lots of nodes with less clients per box. I tend to lean towards spreading our load across hardware but you do still need appropriate hardware.
What type of raid you are going to run? I would suggest to stay away from Raid 5 at all costs. For my money it's all Raid 10 when it comes to high performance I/O.
AMD is doing really well right now in the server market and more cores is a LOT better than hyper threading.

You're right, was thinking about a 32GB server
Anyway when you only want one Quad core a X3450 would do the job.

We will e running raid-10 hence the 4 drives. We found that between hardware and licensing costs it's better to run large nodes.

This is not always the case, Whiles you might see a better margin, If this "Big Node" go's down your going to have more unhappy clients than say splitting that client base across say 2 "smaller nodes"
Depending on your budget their is 2 routes you can take a single Quad Core CPU or a Dual Quad Core CPU of course the latter is going to require a Dual socket motherboard which will increase costs, For a decent Dual Quad Core setup your going to be talking about $1,500 for the processors and motherboard alone.
What is your budget for the overall build or for this part of the build?

We were planning on spending no more than $1500. Right now we have priced it all out to $1800 with 2 x E5620's. Thats why we are trying to figure out what most providers use for their processors to see if maybe we can get by with something not so extreme.

We use mostly 3440s or dual e5520s. you should try the latest sandybridge E3 1230/70 ones.

Definitely go for the newer E3 Xeons over the X3400 series... Performance wise, they outperform the X3400s, and the price difference is minuscule, if any, between them.

Yea, some people suggested the E3-1270 and that would be my choice as well but do you think a single E3 will be sufficient? We currently use 2 x e5405's, would the E3 be comparable to that?

There is a brand new 6 core Intel Xeon that absolutely destroys the 6 core AMD boxes at a decent price.
Check out the E5645/E5649
