    Does IP location affect ranking?

Does the location of your IP affect your SEO ranking? Specifically say a company based in Australia is hosting their website on a hosting company in the US. Will that AU company be penalized?

No, changing an IP does not affect SEO. It can affect only in the case of blacklisted IPs.

someone told me that certain numbers in the IP like a lower number is better for SEO (like have 12.5.4.13 vs 216.74.212.97).... is it for real or was this person giving everyone a load?

To be fair some sites with 'low' IP are high ranked (like 12.* = AT&T = hosts some high profile sites) and 8.* are pretty much level3 dialup or high profile stuff like google dns... 18.* is a .edu

That might be where it originated from - just ..first-allocated hosts having domains from the 90s

Yes i think location of your IP affect your SEO ranking

Yes the Ip location will affect the ranking, i.e the local domain like .au, .in, will have low competition in compare of global domain like .com. There will be different ranking position for the local search and global search.

I don't think there's any issue on that one. Your site will rank when it's deserving.

Yes it has a big effect on local search. You can also increase your local ranking by adding the sites location on Google webmaster tools.

I have sites hosted in USA but sites are targeting Malta, Europe. I never had a problem and all of sites are seen as a local sites. When you request pages located under Malta, my sites are there although hosting is in USA. You can add META tag for geo location by defining latitude and longitude of targeted country...its been working form me. Also, try to get links from local site and for sure you will be OK

I think IP doesn't affect SEO. Also it's no matter what kind of IP do you have. Ofcourse another situation with blacklisted IPs.

I think that the location of IP will not be effective in case of getting good ranking in SEO rather there are other important factors which are of much more significance than this.

Few days back, I had a look on Matt Cutts video on the same issue...he told that when it's a .com domain then it's become somewhat tricky to understand the relevancy of the site for a user searching in Australia..so it next searches for datacenter location or IP address in order to return relevant results....But he also mentioned that if you want your site to search in results of a particular country then either your website content should speak that or you can set that in Google Webmasters Settings.

So if your domain use .au domain tld then I feels that you need not worry about datacenter location
