Question Fighting Spam on a VPS with Plesk 9.5?

    Hi!

Some of my domains have a serious spam problem and it looks like Spamassassin isn't the #1 solution.
For myself, I do use google apps with my own domains (set up with googles mx servers) and am really impressed how great their spam filter works.

As some of the domains owners won't switch to google apps I would like to provide them at least an assumable spam filter.

I don't expect to get an "install this and you're done" solution, but maybe you can help me out where I should have an deeper look at, based on your experiences.

    Any help is highly appreciated,
    sunish

Spam filters like SpamAssassin works well. You can customize it, too, if you want, to weight points differently.

Using a DNSBL is another option.

Or outright ban IPs or IP ranges. (Example: I block mail from 41.x.x.x range.)

    I do all of this.

Thanks for your answer. Are there ip lists of known spammers they often use? I could imagine they try to fake ip's or change them often?!

Spammers can't fake an IP address.
At best, spammers can use a proxy or open relay, but there will always be a trail of some kind.
And then you can block the proxy or bad mail server.

If you're really paranoid, get Barracuda hardware.

If you're using Plesk, then it will integrate SpamAssassin right into the control panel so your customers can managed their spam settings. But you will need to get the Power Pack add-on as SpamAssassin is not enabled in the base license. This would probably be the best way to go since Plesk takes care of integrating it into the mail server.

So, actually, for a few extra bucks a month, we can get a "install this and you're done" solution.

    Hi

Are you getting bombarded with SPAM or is your server sending lots of SPAM ?

I have found plesk to be really hard to find where the SPAM is coming from.

We employ a greylisting solution which does help a little.

    Thanks

Good question, its so long since I installed it..

I just had a quick look but its gone from the net. But having googled it there are a few solutions there now.

    One on WHT itself.
