Cisco 2970
Does anyone have experience using a Cisco 2970 as an access layer switch to provide gigabit ethernet?

We've been using a pair of 2970G-24TS-E switches for about 5 years, and haven't had any problems. The 1.5U size is a bit awkward, but it's not a big deal.

They are older and EOL. They are a nice managed gig-e switch though for what you can buy them for used. I believe they are layer 2 only.
I would make sure to have a spare on hand to be on the safe side due to the age of even the newest ones out there.

Correct, they're layer 2 switches. Support is supposed to end on October 16, 2011, so we'll be upgrading ours soon. For someone that wants to save some money with a used switch, I think they still have a few more years of use as a good GigE switch.
Another option now would be the 2960S. We chose the 2970 when the 2960 was just a 100Mbps switch, but that has changed with the 2960S series.Scott Burns, President

They seem to be the best value for a Cisco gigabit switch. For that price, there is no reason to not have spares.
Any other suggestions?

We have a few of these switches in production now, and have not had any issues with them. They are solid layer 2 gigabit switches.
