I only own a few domains, but most of them are either
    1. the exact keyword(s) as they are typed in Google
    or
    2. very catchy/funny and because of that, easier to remember

If you are planning on attracting users *mainly* by advertising on keywords or other online campaigns, and Google searches, then keywords should always be the highest priority.

create an email account for it and let people know, maybe put up a landing page (dependant on what your doing with it).

If your savvy make it a parked page.

If you ask me, I choose .com domain, it should be as much as unique as catchy, moreover, it has to be short and descriptive.

My biggest thing is that it is short, to the point and easy to spell. Personally, I like .com domains.

Me too. I like .net too, but I will most likely go for .com to avoid confusion among non internet savvy users.

Has to be a dot come and short... If an investment, I'll buy .com, .net... and most of the time .org as well. Tends to bring more when trying to sell (unless those are open at the time of selling).

Waited once, only to see some jackaz register the .net, .org, .us, .biz, etc and tell me my .com was worthless and I should sell it to him for cheap. I still got that worthless .com.... think I serve files off of it. lol

But heck, one of the first things I'll do is check the domain to ensure it is not black listed!!!!

Recently had that happen to a friend (really, it was not me!!). Crazy... get a dropped domain and you never know what it was used for in the past.
Windows 10 to Linux and Mac OSX: I'm PARSECs better than you. Eat my dust!!!

Always TLD domain come to my mind. Keyword with.COM with be the priority if target glabal. Prefer country domain name if target in own country.
It would help in SEO .
