How many visits per day do you get? And as already asked, what kind of plan are you running on now? Thanks.

Another question.. do you enable images / attachments on the forum. This will make quite a difference to the server you use for it.

Just read through this, and we really do ask too many questions,
Without giving enough answers...
To sum it up, A dedicated for your forum would be a huge waste of money.
You need a non-oversold VPS in my opinion.

I'd say it depends if it is growing, and also if it allows attachments the size might be massive with that many users. I doubt it is growing that fast, as with 10k users there should be more than 100 users online at once I'd think (I have 6k users and >200 online at once).
If disk space is not too bad I would agree with you, a dedicated server is overkill, although considering the fact it is just a single site you won't need to worry about cPanel licence etc, so a low end dedicated server would not cost too much, and with 100 users online at once the forum could be monetized to cover the costs several times over, easily.

Definately agree there to be honest,
Certainly a lot of monetizing ability with that amount of actives.

Quite a low spec processor, but ram, harddisk and bandwidth is high. Are you sure you need that much ram, hardisk and bandwidth?

I think a dedicated server would be more then you currently need. But it depends on your current setup and how well things are running currently. What specs is your shared account on? I think RAM and CPU will be your most important features on what I would recommend to be a VPS server. Most hosts will provide you with MRTG graphs to view your usage of these. Once you start getting low on free resources then you upgrade your VPS until your budget allows for a more powerful fully dedicated machine. I would check around with some different hosts and get some quotes and compare. A fully managed VPS server should work just fine for your site.
