Wireless Access to a building 1250 away.

I was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right direction...

I would like to have wireless internet in another building that is 1251 feet away from the building that has internet. I do not have Line of Site due to tress and possibly clipping the side of another building.

Would I be able to use two access points with high gain Omni Antennas? Don't want to spend a fortune and am up to a handy man challenge.

    Thanks,
    T.R.

Afaik Line of site is a must but maybe not with your distanc. I'll contact a man I know that sets up the local WAN, if hes available I'll ask him for you and see what he says.

I don't it will create a problem but it will be better if you cant your service provider for this as they can only tell you the exact solution.

I may be wrong, but at that type of distance don't you need your own frequency? Which then in turn requires FCC paperwork or something.

I could be way off target but I could swear I remember hearing something like that somewhere.

Line of sight is important when shooting over distance with hi gain antennas. I tried this one over a much shorter distance, and the few trees in the path seemed to make it impossible to reach the other. I eventually gave up on it. Still have the equipment.

Line of sight is a must. If you do have it then use wave guides. A group used normal wifi and wave guides to transmit across the Gibraltar striates. But in this case fibre underground, sewer maybe?

In my experience, these kinds of wireless links are pretty hard to establish/maintain. I wouldn't do it. :/

We use the EOC5611p & EOC2011P by EnGenius. We have one pair running 800 metres (Around 2400 feet) and connects between 24mb & 36mb. There is a few trees between then but nothing to major.

You will need to get a license for the 5611 model in most areas which in the UK is only $75 then $1.50 per device. The 2011P runs on normal wireless b/g so is license free in most countries.

That's the same question I ask myself with almost all of huma's posts unfortunately.

With regard to the OP, it depends what's between the two sites, this is both in terms of what's between them physically, and in terms of interference.

Do they work without line-of-sight? It's my understanding that LoS requirements are due to the frequency in use, not the particular transmitter/etc. 5Ghz is high enough where tree foliage can block it, IIRC.

Just from the reviews people are saying it works well with trees in the mix. For $140 and something I can return if it doens't work, worth giving a shot. Thanks roburry.

Yes it works ok without LOS to a point but it does help from me experience keeping them the same height and if you can use the 5ghz ones as there is less interference from other normal wireless access points operating on 2.4ghz. But as mentioned before you may need a license.

Also… These devices allow you to run a scan of the local area and see what channels are less used so you can fix your boxes to a specific channel to establish a more stable connection.

If Line of site is an issue then 5GHZ will make it worse, try using 900MHZ gear, it might not be as fast but it is less susspectable to line of sight issues.
