VPS with IPS and Firewall Protection?

I've been looking for a VPS, and some offers indicate IPS (intrusion prevention system) and Firewall protection.

I'm not certain about is what this kind of service can provide. My understanding is that an IPS monitors for "suspicious" network activity. Am I right to assume that IPS would not prevent a site from being compromised (e.g. via SQL injection), tho it may mitigate the damage?

I currently have a managed VPS which is decent so far. I'm wondering whether IPS is necessary and if all VPSs should come with it.

This preventions are based in DOS and brute force attacks and your provider can block analizing logs or with Hard solutions.
But a SQL injection is a Soft issue, not related with the infra.
