Beta test new BQBackup feature: Rsync setup wizard for shared hosting and resellers
BQBackup is currently testing a custom-developed backup solution for shared hosting accounts and hosting resellers. In the past, customers generally set up the backup using an SSH shell, following a set of instructions. Our new setup wizard does not require shell access, and is very easy to use.
Step 1: Upload our PHP file to your website
Step 2: Access it through your browser to configure the backup
Step 3: Relax!
We are currently seeking beta testers. You will be provided with 2GB of backup space for the duration of the test period, which is expected to run through June 30.
If you have any questions, feel free to post here. If you would like to participate, please email me directly at [email protected].
Very nice Scott, But may I ask whats the security aspects?
The setup script is run on your server, and it configures an automatic daily cron job to run Rsync. The backups are pushed from your server to our backup server, and it uses key-based authentication, which the setup script takes care of for you. Since your server initiates the backups, and they are pushed to the backup server, the backup server does not need to have access to your hosting account. This works with standard shared hosting accounts, so root access is not required.
I would love to see features such as those of cpremote in your script too
Our cPanel integration script will have many similar features, but it doesn't require installing a cPanel plugin (which requires root access). We do plan on creating a plugin as an extra convenience, but it won't be necessary.
Can this be used on a vps with out cpanel or directadmin? I don't use either, but it would be nice to have an easy way to setup backup.
Yes, but you would have to run the setup script separately for each user, and it wouldn't include system files. If you have root access, I would just use our normal Rsync setup instructions, which take about 5-10 minutes to follow, and it will back up your entire server.
