    * YouTube = Slow...

    Heya,

    Does anyone else find YouTube slow? It's like they run out of bandwidth, or rather then bandwidth it's like they have a i/o problem..

    Is YouTube slow for you aswell? It seems like alot of the video sites actually have this problem...

    My ISP just partnered and is peering with them and youtube is very fast now, gotta say I don't use it much but not waiting 4 minutes to watch something when I do decide to watch it is very nice.

    Seems fine for me, but I'm on a 25mbit vdsl line, but to be fair streaming 1080p or 720p worked fine on a regular 7mbit DSL line. I guess it depends on your routing as Stephen implied.

    Initial video 'burst' is nice but it drops down to only ~300KB/s afterwards on a 1080

    If anything, I think the intro ads they have added to most videos have slowed down you-tube significantly, but I guess they have to pay their bills somehow?

    Never slow for me. Must be your ISP. Try decreasing the resolution to 240p instead of 360p or 480p, and it might load faster but with low quality.

    Youtube afaik is going to be even more commercialised soon, once google decide what theyr going to do. One of my friends who's into this sort of stuff said youtube may start billing to view some content.

    So it may not be pay to view some content but pay to have higher bandwidth. similar to free and premium members in download sites maybe.

    My ISP started peering with the Google-AS as well. Slowness has been terminated for now.

    Well, have you tried pressing play and then quickly pausing and letting the whole video load and buffer before pressing play to watch it through to the end? If not, try that.

    Well, in some cases they are really slow, but actually I think it depends on the current visiting count or the server that you are downloading from.

    If Youtube incorporates "rentals", I hope it crashes horribly on them. It works great free, and is already getting enough revenue the way it is right now.

    Youtube is affected by all of the same limitations and problems of any host. They have a gigantic and complex network of servers and bandwidth.

    They also seem to employ some type of rate limiting that is IP-based from what I have seen. It's the same thing as QoS on a network. The initial burst that loads fast is a buffering technique, and then they reduce the speeds using some type of QoS.

    You used to be able to pause and let it load quickly, but now that they have QoS services enabled the loading exponentially slows down. They assume that if you're not watching it that it doesn't need to load fast. They were wasting TONS of bandwidth before by not rate limiting it.

    I think they are doing quite a good job with the amount of traffic they have. They have only had minor downtime since their original inception. You have to give them some credit for what they've done, but it does get annoying when you only watch videos in 1080p and it doesn't load fast enough to skip around or watch a video without buffering.
