After many, many years with our current dedicated server, it is time to upgrade. I've looked around and I have decided to go with iWeb. I am looking at two different options and would appreciate any personal experience with their Smart Servers. My primary concerns are:
1)Since it it technically a VPS server, have you found any software mods that did not work(ex:Apache Mods, PHP Pear mods, etc)
2)Did you regret going with a Smart Server compared to a dedicated server?
3)If you have cPanel in your smart server and it is considered a VPS, does cPanel report it as being a VPS? Any problems with cPanel? If it is cPanel VPS, shouldn't the cPanel license be cheaper per month?
These are my main concerns but if you have something else to say, go right ahead!
Also, I have not ruled out a new dedicated server so let me ask which one would you pick considering they will cost the same at the end of the day. I am leading twords the first one since it has 4 cores.
Choice 1: Core 2 Quad @ 2.66ghz, 4GB ram, 1TB hdd in raid 1(very important to me) - This is the smart server.
Choice 2: Dual Core i3 @ 3.06ghz, 8GB ram, 1TB hdd in raid 1 - This is the dedicated server.
Maybe I can answer for question #3 : cPanel's Aaron Wall posted a statement about this on our forums. cPanel is working on a fix that should be released shortly to remove the VPS mention on Smart Servers but it has not been released yet. As the provider, we have to pay full price for the cPanel licence for Smart Servers, we have tried hard to get the VPS pricing from cPanel especially with the VPS mention inside the CP but without success. The best we have obtained is for them to release a fix to remove the VPS Optimized logo in the case of a Smart Server.
I know you are partial and you don't have to answer this but are there any known software related problems that are not documented or have people been disappointed and wanted a dedicated server instead?
There should not be software related problems beside things that can't run inside a Xen environment (other virtualization technologies for example). There are currently some known restrictions/issues that are reported here on our status blog. Those should be resolved shortly. I guess some customers will come here shortly and give you more feedback.
@Myown : There is no known issue for harddisk connectivity on Smart that I know of. Maybe your specific server had a harddisk connectivity problem but I doubt it was related to Smart. A server can be down for many reasons. You are talking about swap and RAM fully consumed .. it looks more like a software or server management issue than with a problem with the hardware, network or smart server itself. Can you send me your ticket number so I can have it reviewed quickly?
Still struggling with this server, last week it was down every day. A lot of i/0 errors, kernel panics. Just last day server hanged 3-4 times. And amazingly when i asked support to let me know my account manager, they told me i dont have an account manger.
I had some issues with a smart server stalling, however after this was repeated a couple of times the support decided to swap out one of the hard drives and after this and a kernel update later, the smart server is stable.
I can still recommend Iweb, even if you run into problems things will get sorted eventually, their hardware is still good and their network is very good. Especially if you also want connectivity towards Europe.
Also, guys like Martin (and also Stephane) are around to help if things do go wrong and they will help escalate your issue if you don't feel like being properly taken care of.
The dedicated is faster if its powered by a core i3 2100 sandy bridge CPU. The extra ram is also useful for php caching purposes.
Just checked the specs. It looks like what you have there is a nehalem core i3 540 which is slower than the quad core but the extra ram could be useful. Depends on what you really need. Is your application RAM intensive or CPU intensive?

Martin replied me today, was saying nothing wrong with server, its 2x Xean quad core, 12 GB ram server. But my previous VPS with 4gb and 3x 2.6 processor was doing better than this. Just happened now and again i am getting a lot of i/0 errors and bad sector reports. Server is again down as usual.
I said I looked at the tickets and saw many things related to RAM and swap usage. Your server has 12GB of RAM and swap had to be extended to 23GB. I also saw in some tickets that our sysadmins had issues when trying to extend the swap or do other things on your server because it was running out of RAM. If your server uses all the available RAM and swap at such extents (it has 12GB ram ! and 23GB swap !) I asked you if you had investigated software related issues or issues related to your applications. I also asked you if your applications where running fine on another type of server before (you state that it was running fine on a VPS here but I did not have this info). You seem to think the issue is related to Smart and I do say it couldn't be, maybe it has to do with the extensive RAM usage you are doing. In order to validate this, what I can suggest is to provide you with a Classic Server for you to try to run from. If you want to try it, let me know and we'll get you a classic server to try.
sysadmin have said again, if this server fall one more time because of i/0 errors, (bad sectors) then he will swap hardware. I hope if it solved the issue then no problem i can live with smart server. I like virtual console, this let me see what exactly going on server.
If it failed then i will go with your offer, or will try to see how ram upgrade can do the trick.
once they said they swap hardware and wait for two hours as data need migration. I assume they replaced HDDs at that time. I would like to keep my data intact of course.
Make a backup of your data now and wait for them to swap the hdds. Also ask them to do a reinstall of the OS. Its quite likely the filesystem will have been corrupted by these read errors so a reinstall is absolutely essential.
This is a known issue we have with our smartservers where sometimes the
sata communication seems to stop. I have escalated the issue to our I.T
dept. who should release a fix in one of our later releases.
The server is back online we apologize for the delay
since last 4 months same answer, first not admitting its known issue, and if admitted then saying will be a fix release soon.
BTW, i have around 50 GB of data or more. Where i should take a backup?
after they "magically rebooted " the server and few sites are working and few sites are not working. Sites are not working, actually not getting any packets to them, no error log messages. Already rebooted twice but its not solving this time. As i know this is common issue with this smart server. but before one or two reboots will fix this strange unknown issue, but this time its not.
Its time to initialize smart layer....
I will coordinate a discussion between the support & dev teams. It does not make sense that this would be a known issue unless it only happens with specific hardware configurations. It is very critical and if we had 3000 Smart Servers running with a possible SATA connection problem we would have a serious problem. I am going to review all this and the status of it at customer support & IT and get back to post an update here.
Update : I was able to get some more info. Of thousands of Smart Servers in production, your case is the 2nd with a similar sata/hard disk issue where hardware tests do not show an actual hardware problem. We are reviewing the similarities between the two cases and will get back to you with a fix shortly.
since more than four months i am struggling with this issue, actually as soon as i purchased server, on second or third day i sniffed issues with this server. Then within a week they swapped the hardware, but my sufferings never ended there. Every month i have countless down time and ...........
I have upgraded to 12 GB more ram = 24 GB now.
Still some time smart layer becomes unavailable and no connection to / from the server is possible. If i use remote console, i can see server is working fine but network access is not working. Working with Support to fix this issue.
