    Dedicated Servers in Canada

Has anybody had any experience with a dedicated server based in canada. There is not a huge selection of options, but there is a few. I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with any of them?

There are a few providers specializing in them. You should check out the Offers section in this forum.

Did you know whether you're looking for East/Western Canada? And do you have a specific target audience that you would like low latency to? That will play a part in choosing the right provider.

I would be looking East Coast. I am not looking for any very specific at the moment. Just getting a feel for the different players in the market, who people have had good experiences with. Currently my hosting is based in the US, but I am looking to adding a Canadian based one in the future.

There's actually a good number of providers in each of Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Obviously, with only 3 real Internet cities in Canada, you're not going to find the wide range of options that you do in the US, but you'll find a comparable number of companies given the relative size of each of the Canadian cities.

An important thing to look for when it comes to a Canadian provider is to check that they have good connectivity both within Canada, and Internationally. Some providers will only have Canadian broadband companies as upstreams, which gives them great connectivity within Canada but International routes sometimes suffers. Such networks include Telus, Shaw, Rogers, Allstream, Bell, Videotron. On the flip side, some providers will only have US/International upstreams, resulting in routing going down to the US and back. The only network in Canada with both strong connectivity within Canada and internationally is PEER 1, as they are the only major content oriented network, although they do have some eyeball networks as downstream customers.

A useful site for checking routing in Canada is Rogers' looking glass:
    https://supernoc.rogerstelecom.net/ops/

This will allow you do things like check how many upstreams a provider has (using BGP), or what your routes will look like using the traceroute function.

They appear to use two upstreams, Shaw and Cogent. They should have decent routing within Canada through Shaw, Shaw in turn uses two upstreams, Level3 and NTT. They're both good networks, but only 2 out of many Tier 1's. Other than that, Primus only appears to use Cogent, which is well, Cogent. So, pretty good within Canada. Okay, but not the greatest for anywhere else, with only 2 Tier 1's and a value network upstream.

Mind you, this is a very bandwidth centric point of view I'm presenting here. If you're not running anything latency sensitive, this may be good enough for your use. I have no experience with them as a facility, so I can't say anything else about them either way on their power, cooling, support, etc.

I have heard that their facility here in Vancouver is nice, but very small.

Since you mentioned Primus, I take it you have a reasonable budget to work with? If that's the case, I would certainly consider www.canadawebhosting.com which is the same as Tenzing (www.tenzing.com)
