    backup and recovery plan

    Hi
We are reseller of some hosting company. We also provide web design and other services. Besides hosting compny file saving , we want to have backup somewhere too. We used do backup on one desktop but unfortunately got crashed today. I lost all previous emails too. How generally web companies do backup and recovery ?

    Thank you

There are many different methods - depends solely on what type of redundancy you are looking to offer, and what your budget is.

Some of the most economical choices are purchasing a remote VPS and using it to store your backups.

Other options are using a raid 1 setup for a direct economical on site backup. This also keeps man power costs down as it automatically writes to both drives.

Are you looking at ways to backup just your company files? Or your companies customer files aswell?

Providing more details could be useful. How much space you need to backup? How often you want to do backups?

    Cheers,
    Ty

Backup and Disaster Recovery. . . it's about how crucial your data is and how much you'd like to spend to make sure you have that data in the event of a failure.

Depending on how many levels of backup you'd like, you have a few options:
    1. As previously stated a good place to start is in a RAID-1 configuration where your drives are mirrored (if one goes down the second will still function)
    2. A drive separate from your RAID array that would allow you to backup data on your server.
    3. A backup to a separate server or NAS whereby you use a software solution or CRON jobs to backup your data
    4. An offsite backup
    5. Physical media backups

It is interesting to note that many do not consider backup to be crucial to their business continuity until they experience data loss themselves. After the fact, everyone is usually all ears if they didn't have a contingency plan in place should their server's data be lost.

Can you please explain, since OP is a reseller, how all this can be applied by a reseller?

It can be applied by anyone. . . reselling is different for each company that offers it. As for Superb, resellers buy/lease servers at a discount that are then resold to their own customers, usually with value added service. They would be able to configure their servers in RAID, add the hot extra drive, have managed services including r1Soft backup and make arrangments for offsite backup as well. Physical media backup would be up to them and anyone who needs backup should be able to arrange for a dedicated server with almost any host and then use a myriad of different ways to move the files. Just because someone is a reseller doesn't mean that they have to do all of their services with the same company. If it's not offered by your host look elsewhere, I'm sure there are many who would gladly assist with your backup and redundancy of your data.

In your scenario your description fits well, but if you through the OP its not the case.

Yes the easiest method for you would be to just grab a VPS server in a different location and keep backups on it. rsync can work wonders. Plus an additional VPS from a reliable hosting company will not cost much for what you would need to keep your data safe and always available to you.

Some datacenters provide 3rd party backup solutions. Try that also
