Shared hosting : Hawk Host or Host Gator?
I'm looking to start a blog, and will be using shared hosting.
Which would you recommend : Hawk Host or Host Gator?

I'm using WP on Hawk Host shared hosting and am happy with the speed of the servers. Support has been reasonable.

Been using Hawk Host for about 2 years. In fact I manage more than one account there since many of my clients have moved to Hawk Host on my recommendation.
I recommend them highly and without hesitation for the quality of service and support they've provided in this time frame.

HawkHost is smaller and likely more customer-centric where as HostGator is quite a bit larger and is likely less customer-centric.
Either should be able to provide you solid service and support overall however.

I don't know about that.
I've clicked on Hawk Host's "Live Chat With Sales" button, and on many occasions the "staff" have been "Offline".
I click on Host Gator's "Live Chat" and I'm connected (within seconds, or under a minute) with staff.
I'm not sure what either's support ticket system is like, but Host Gator beats Hawk Host with live chat.

If live chat is your only consideration when choosing a host, then I wish you the best of luck with HostGator

If there is an issue (i.e. downtime on your website), then wouldn't you prefer to speak with someone instantly, or have to e-mail a ticket and maybe wait 24 hours for a response?

No. Rarely is it possible to address an issue live.
And then there's no reason to wait 24 hours. Most tickets, from a good host, are answered in minutes.

Hostgator all of the way. I've been with them for over a year and love their live chat.

I'd go with Hawk Host for the simple fact that Host Gator claims to offer unlimited diskspace/bandwidth (which I am not a fan of). With that being said, HG is one of the better unlimited providers, however I believe that if you go with a non unlimited provider, you will have a higher chance of landing on a server that is not congested or over crowded.
In addition, like Mike pointed out, Hawk Host is hosting about 20k domain names where as HG is hosting over a million. Therefore you are more likely to get a more personal experience with Hawk Host than you would with HG. I've been hanging around WHT for awhile now and I will tell you that I have yet to see any negative reviews from Hawk Host customers, where as Host Gator its pretty much 50/50 (half bad, half good).
Anyway, hope that helps!

HG's been great to me
I've been using their service (as a reseller) for a year now, before I switched to reseller, I had been using their shared hosting service for about 7-8 months.
The LIVE CHAT is also great, many of my issues can be solved on time and without long delay.

It depends on how much web space you will be using.

if you are doing anything mission critical, i'd try to stay away from hawkhost, mainly because they look a little small timers.
but if you are not, i don't see why not, go for it.

Not to be rude, but this statement is not totally accurate. HostGator might be well established, but that doesn't mean that they are better. HawkHost is highly reputable and seems to offer services on par or better than HostGator's services.
If you want customer service on a personal level, I would suggest staying away from HostGator. If you don't want oversold servers, I also suggest staying away from HostGator. If you don't care about anything I just mentioned, than be my guest.

Hawk host is more of a community centered host, while Hostgator is more of a 'corporate' host.
I would go with Hawkhost for the sole reason they are a community centered host, which means more personalized and faster support.
Sometimes... big host ! = quality
