Win2K or Linux?

I've noticed that the majority of hosts are Unix based verses Win2K. Currently, I'm on a win 2K host but I need to find another one ASAP. Should I switch to a unix based plan? Is there really an advantage of unix based over WIN 2K? I would probably have to convert my Access database to mySQL I suppose...

It all depends on what you want to do!

If you need ASP scripting, Access or MS SQL Server databases, or Windows CGI/ISAPI web applications, then you need Windows hosting. Otherwise, Linux/Unix will do just fine.

Some UNIX/Linux webhosts have support for ASP and such, it depends. Ask around and see what you get.

Microsoft based technology are best supported on Windows platform. *nix solutions are based on emulation and gateways which can't compete with built-in native support. I have heard stories of incompatibilities with these *nix products.

That shouldn't be too hard, because Access supports mySQL. If that is all you are worried about, then you can pick and choose.

Unix hosts have support for the "XBitHack", a way to enable SSI processing while keeping your filenames .html instead of .shtml. W2k doesn't have those kinds of permission bits needed for the (harmless) hack. One reason I'd never go to W2k if I can help it.

If you have the time and it isn't too much work, transfer over to a Linux plan. You will have a more reliable server and better expectations from mosts hosts.

Why is "keeping your filenames .html instead of .shtml" of any importance?
