Cautious 301 Redirect for old domain name and links

I have for the past several years had two domains pointing to the same hosting account. I would now like to drop one of these domain names. Also we are changing a few important links as well. So what I have is this.

    Domain changes:
DomainOne.com - shutting down public access
    DomainTwo.com - keeping

    Link changes:
    DomainTwo.com/pages/mypage.html >>> DomainTwo.com/pages/mypage2.html

    Scary stuff:
Google has this page ranked pretty high:
    DomainOne.com/pages/mypage.html

What is the best way to do this using only an .htaccess file? It is okay to have basically two redirects ... one from the old domain, then when they get there, the new domain redirects on the link?

I believe that 2 redirects will harm your rankings and 301 is the best fit for SEO as always

That is my thoughts as well, I'll just do the domain 301 first ... wait a few years then 301 the links.

Redirect 301 for domain and also for pages too. You know sometimes Google will rank new domain more than the old one. Build links properly to new one. Old link juice with new link power makes your pages to hit more traffic.

I believe the most appropriate action for this is the following.

(I am assuming that you are using a common .htaccess file for the two domains since they're hosted in the same webspace)

Include a rule in the .htaccess file that would rewrite DomainTwo.com/pages/mypage.html to DomainTwo.com/pages/mypage2.html

Once the above is done successfully, include another rule in the same .htaccess file to redirect DomainOne.com/pages/mypage.html directly to DomainTwo.com/pages/mypage2.html

Note: redirecting DomainOne.com/pages/mypage.html to DomainTwo.com/pages/mypage.html, which redirects to DomainTwo.com/pages/mypage2.html waste a lot of PR and can possibly confuse spiders, so the above is the recommended way.

You may need to file codes under the appropriate http request so the server knows what to do and when to do it.

I've actually read a post by caseyhen which include a video transcript of Rand Fishkin's newly uncovered useful alternative for 301 redirection. Rand conducted an experiment, which turned out to be a helpful resource for anyone having a problem with redirecting domains or solving page duplicate problems. I thought the post would be a great addition to what's being discussed in this thread. Here's Cross-Domain Canonical The New 301? at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/cross-dom...teboard-friday
