    2000+ Websites

Is it recommended to have 2000+ websites on a shared hosting server?

    That's what I actually thought.
I mean even you have connection limitation - I think this is too much overselling.

    Hi

Surely it all depends on the server and the sites, if they are all static websites with minimal mysql then 2000 on a shared hosting box is very little. also if you use SAS 15K drives in a Raid 10 config this also helps with increasing the number of websites.

Admitidly if you are giving each client lots of space and bandwith then its another matter.

    Thanks

I/O is the only bottleneck. But like the poster above says, 15k drives in Raid 10 could hold 2000 websites easily (as long as you can meet the resource commitments).

If I were you I would split it up over multiple servers.

I still find this too much...Its like one boom - 2000+ of customers are going to complain and yell on you.

I agree that the I/O is the only bottleneck. You need a really powerful hardware redundant machine to host 2000 accounts on it. It is probably a good idea to virtualize it using any form of full virtualization. If most of those 2000 website do not take a lot of resources you might host them. However this would be far from "reliable web hosting". I do not think that you'd keep more that 500 shared account on one physical server. I also do not suggest disc space overselling. Make sure you have 20% - 25% unused disc space.

Do the calculations, your setup can vary from server to server and it comes down to how much space, bandwidth, pop, database storage is being used. I set mine at default for every 200 accounts and have not had issues. Not a lot of profit but never have bad comments on my setup/business either.

    Best of luck!

Anything more than 300 on a shared server will be pushing it.

I agree! Much safer to split it into say 3 or 4 servers!

I would try to keep it under 250 even on really powerful hardware because if too many people try to burst at once you are going to get lots of complaints.
