Trying to follow instructions to create a samba mount for backups, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work.
mount -t cifs //184.108.40.206/user_name -o username=user_name,password=xxxxxx /backupdir
Is there something wrong with these instructions from the service provider?

No, there is nothing wrong with those instructions.
To figure out why it isn't working, I would try the following:
mount -t cifs //220.127.116.11/user_name /backupdir --verbose -o user=user_name,pass=xxxxx
With the verbose option, you may be likely to get some feedback at the CLI that helps you understand where things are going wrong with establishing the connection.
