Looking for ideas to host e-mail for a small business - alternative to Google Apps
I was notified yesterday that they're changing their rules for Google Apps Standard and limiting the number of users to 10 for the free option.
Here's the situation: I've been cloud hosting (via my Rackspace cloud hosting site) a small business that hosts videos to try to get filming jobs. It does this, in part, by creating a new show name and domain to go along with it. I was creating a Google Apps account for every show name so the business could have custom e-mails for every show they produce. There are about 40 employees.
They sort of use those e-mails for a while and then, when the new show comes, they start using the new e-mail addresses. Google apps was perfect for this because it was free.
I am wondering if there are any alternatives that any are aware of. I don't mind that it's not free but $25/person for every show for a year is a non-starter.
I've thought about getting a VPS account just for this purpose. I'm curious what ideas others may have out there or other economical email hosting providers that would provide the flexibility I'm articulating.

How many emails are you sending? if its not an outrageous amount you might even just get a shared hosting account with unlimited email accounts and when the old addresses become obsolete deleting the old email accounts so your not using up a lot of disk space.
Good call. I think I'll go with that. It will add storage and compute cycles to the overall bill but it should be cheaper than paying for another solution.
Not to mention I have ALWAYS experienced very very good support and reliability. With email - I ALWAYS suggest going for somebody who wont all of a sudden end up on 6 RBL's causing major issues (Has happened to me in the past...)
