Review this dedicated setup.
I'm looking to upgrade next week and have put a package together,
Just wanting an opinion on how well this would work as a VPS hosting server.
CentOS Base OS
OpenVZ + Xen (I have no intention of overselling)
Dual Core Xeon 3050 / E6500 CPU 2.93ghz (2MB Cache)
5 GB DDR2 Memory
3 x 250 GB SATA HDD (RAID 10)
100mbps Port – 5tb transfer/month
-------------------------------------------
I've done alot of thinking regarding Xen,
I've heard alot of talk that an overselling capability can save a server from crashing at peak, has Xen made a patch for this yet?
Basically I read (on here) about a host that ran some vps, apparently RAM peaked, so Xen killed about half of the VPS processes, now this guy wasn't overselling (not an bad-service amount), it was just bad config.
I want todo my research, because if that happened to me I'd probably be on the next plane to go destroy my offshore box.
Opinions and suggestions people, but real ones please, I want to know experiences about those specs etc, not rumours.
Also please don't recommend other hosts to me, I'm signed with a certain datacentre so won't be moving.
Thankyou for reading.

The bottleneck on that server is going to be the processing power, unless you plan on selling high ram VPSs. If you gave each VPS 1gb of ram (~4 will fit after overhead) Each VPS would only get about 1.5ghz of processing power.

5GB RAM not that it is bad but a little odd number
3 x 250 GB SATA HDD (RAID 10)
raid10 requires minimum 4 drives
whole things looks fishy

Ahh my bad! - I meant 4x 250HDD, forgot to put the primary!
I have a setup like this, just with less RAM and less HDD's (NO RAID)
CPU will be fine, as if this box does the job I'll be keeping this server but buying a higher spec also.
I'll end up with around 4GB RAM left to allocate, after overhead and my little scripts.
What I'm balancing, is that I'll have 1000GB(~9000) HDD, but only 5GB RAM, in other words, I can either offer high HDD packages, or have way too much spare disk space (otherwise I could forget about RAID, and go for higher RAM?) :/
Decisions Decisions!

Your server would be underpowered. Plus, 5GB of RAM is not really something which is enough. What sort of packages are you actually looking to sell? Get a server which is a little more powerful.

Use 6-8GB RAM and DDR3 NOT DDR2, use Quad Core NOT Dual Core unless Dual Quad Core

I'm considering this:
Core2Quad Q9300 Quad Core Dedicated Server
Single CPU Quad Core 2.5GHz 1333FSB (6MB CACHE)
5000GB/Month Bandwidth
8GB DDR2 RAM
1TB SATA HDD
Better?

I would just buy an I7 or the latest out for speed. Add more hard drives for speed.
Or you can use CPU benchmarking websites that have simple graphs to see what is a good deal performance/price ratio wise and what is available from your host.
Don't just go by how things "sound" in processors because there's no official standard anymore that you can easily go by (like clock rate). If you're just going by I5/I7, dual, core2, etc, etc, then you might as well go for Dual thunder extreme nuclear war hexa-core Z99.
This is what happens without standards! go by benchmarks.

"What I'm balancing, is that I'll have 1000GB(~9000) HDD"
Maybe I'm missing something there, but if you have 4x250GB in RAID-10, you'll have 500GB after RAID. (and what's the ~9000 mean?)

~9000 is the total space I'll have, so yes approx 450gb to allocate.
I work it out as a total because of the different raid configs, with this it doesnt matter how raid 10 is setup to distribute.
The unallocated 50GB would be for obviously OS, scripts and then rest is standby upgrade allocation.
