how could I go about running the DNS and domain on the same PC?
I'm a bit confused at the process for running your own DNS.
I would like to run a domain off my PC using Apache and also run a name server on the same machine.
Is this possible??
My main confusion comes from the fact that the Registrars ask for your name server in the format
dns1.xyz.com instead of the IP of the computer it is on. So, if I wanted to run domain xyz.com off my PC then it would
seem that the name server would have to be something like dns.xyz.com. However, I don't understand
how anyone could ever reach my name server if I never supplied my IP.
So, long story short, how could I go about running the DNS and domain on the same PC.
There's another step involved. You need to register the nameservers with the registrar in addition to changing the nameservers of the domain. Registering the nameservers is when they ask for IP.
Take a look at this guide. Among other things, it shows how to configure DNS with a single IP address and run a DNS server on the same server as Apache. Start on page 4 for illustrated instructions to do what WickedFactor was talking about.
