We use brocade ti-24x for our SAN solution, been very happy with them so far.

I wouldn't touch Extreme or Dell with a 10 foot pole...

We've had a 60%+ failure rate within 3 years on Extreme switches (~2% on Cisco).

Then with Dell, the switches work great until you put some real load on them. We've tried them in two "cloud" setups and it seems the sheer number of packets moving around for storage, etc. causes all sorts of issues (though that was with the 6200 series). They'd basically just choke on the load...

Arista, Brocade, and Juniper all make quality 10g switches that aren't terribly priced.

Also, have you looked at Infiniband as an option?

I was going to ask the same thing. 40Gbps Infiniband switches and cards are very competitive with 10GE solutions, with better latency and throughput. Linux has had an SRP Initiator for a while now, and the SCST project provides SRP Target support. It's not much different than using iSCSI.

10g infiniband is also a good option if you're cost sensitive. You can get that stuff basically for free on ebay.

As to dell, I believe their all-10g switch is a significantly different hardware than their other gear, maybe even a different manufacturer. I have no experience with their all-10g stuff, but experience with their 6200 line isn't terribly relevant to their 8124 equipment since all their gear is OEM'ed to begin with.

Arista of course has a solid reputation and fairly reasonable pricing.

More stable than iSCSI from what I've seen.

I'd have to second Juniper and HP makes a pretty solid switch as well. The best bang for your buck likely comes with the 4200's especially if you want to easily scale.

I really would not use Extreme or Dell unless you want a future nightmare. Brocade is supposed to have a pretty decent 10GE platform but I have 0 experience with it.

I'm 100% set on Arista for stuff like this, the price point and performance is great, especially for storage.

The Force10 switches have good reviews typically and price points are reasonable. Cisco and Juniper ones will work well typically in all situations, I am not sold on the Dell stuff.

For a 10GE storage network, the EX2500 looks appealing. It has 24 SFP+ ports, and I see a couple places selling them for ~$7500.

I haven't seen any mentions of extreme switches in any 10gb network designs.

Usually the players are Cisco, Broacde, Arista, and Blade networks.

One of the Juniper Switches is an OEM from Blade. Can't remember which, but its obvious since it doesn't run the JunOS.

I liked Arista, but ended up going with a pair of Nexus 5010's.

Extreme is mostly used in schools/colleges. They have 40Gb uplinks for their 8800 series switches. It's not bad stuff, and I haven't had any failures on extreme stuff, except a problem with a 10Gb card, which ended up being the entire module not the actual 10Gb card.

Anyways, I have heard good things about Force10. Of course the top dogs like Juniper, Brocade, and Cisco are always good choices. I would pick one based on your budget and what you are familiar with using.

Given the huge volume of Extreme stuff I've seen over the last few weeks in 3 different DCs, I'd say there's plenty being used in DC environment as well

We recently purchased a few HP A5820s for use for our storage network, and have been quite happy with them. These are ex-3com switches. If you work HP enough (probably need to order more than just these switches), you can get these very decently priced.

Is it managed? Easy to administer like Dell?

The A5820 is 24 ports? How much did you get it?

Did you try A5810? I believe this one has 48 ports?

Looking to try also other switch for our next colocation DC :-)

Its a layer 3 switch, although we are not really using any of the layer 3 functionality with it being a SAN switch. On paper they are quite powerful with line rate performance across all ports, with no contention - which is one of the main reasons we chose it.

I have not really had a chance to personally administer the HP A5820, as our network guys handle this. However from what I've heard, it is similar to IOS just using different names for each of the functions.

Yes, the A5820 is 24 x SFP+ (10GB) ports - I can't give you exact pricing as this was part of a bigger deal. But lets just say we got the pricing close to what you can get the Dell 8024F for

No, we have not tested the A5810 - this is a 48 x 1Gb port switch with 2 10Gb ports.

We paid < $100/port for our 8024s. So if you got the HPs for that then they were a very good deal.
