Want to control dedicated server remotely via FTP

    hi
there is a guy who did it, and he just won't tell me how he did it, just because he is complete moron, no other reason.
anyway what he did is that:
lets say i have dedicated server and the ip is for example: 95.168.181.240
everybody have administative permissions and all works good.
now many times im downloading huge files. sizes like 10-15 gb's each.
and to download them to my computer what im doing is uploading to a server, or direct admin that i own, and then downloading it to my computer via direct link, which not always supply maximum speed.
so what the guy did is made the dedicated server as ftp.
so lets say i have client such as flash fxp or cute ftp or whatever, and the dedicated server was 95.168.181.240
and the user lets say is root and password is blabla
so he connect to the server trough the client this way:
    ftp://administrator:blabla@95.168.181.240
and by this way he can see all the hard drive and download and upload whatever he fill without doing what i do (after downloaded files, uploading to some kind of server, and then downloading the files from the server to my computer).
and this way he has profit of maximum download speed since the dedicated server has high bandwidth (100mb upload\download) and unlike me, he is not depended on the bandwidth of the server that he uploaded the files to. so most of times its going pretty quick, im uploading to the server and then copy\pasting the link to my download manager and its flowing, but now for example, im getting only 40% of the download speed im able to have, additionally, im filling kinda stupid working twice while i can do it in 1 time, which means after i downloaded file via dedicated server, i will connect to the dedicated server from the ftp client and will have access to all of its hard drive. the reason im not downloading from my computer in 1st place is because i have some kinda problem with my ISP so i get crappy speed of just 40-50kb per sec for some reason. and from the dedicated server its get his maximum speed
im using windows 7 and the dedicated server has windows server 2003 btw. i tried the regular user\pass but it wouldn't work.
    thanks in advanced.

Not quite sure what you're asking. Are you trying to use SFTP?

    But then SFTP is slower...

    dont know what is sftp
what i want is that i can have root access via ftp client to the server
that i will put the ip , user & pass after the ftp://
expamle: if i have in the server i the hd file called file.rar, i can grab it that way: ftp://administrator:blabla@95.168.181.240/file.rar

don't know what you are asking you want to secure your transfer?
for this yes it will work

You can use SFTP in FileZilla or WinSCP

    Host: 95.168.181.240
    User: root
    Password: <password>

Just change Protocol: in FTP client from FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)

If I understand you correctly, you're trying to transfer from a remote source "through" a dedicated server to you?

If that's the case, you're going to be limited by the slowest of the transfer speeds available, probably from the server to you.

It doesn't matter which way you do it - Your home transfer speed will always limit you.

    nope. its still 22

    actually i don't.
im just waiting for the guru that will solve the issue and will tell me: "all u have to do is that and that."
    hope it will be soon.
the reason im sure there is something that must be done in the server is because i once had ftp root access to some server.
and connected to him regular like that:
    host: 95.168.181.240
    user: adminiiartor
    pass: <password>
nothing unusual was or needed to be change in order to get in.
    but it was long ago

There is nothing to make SFTP work, it works when SSH is enabled.

WTF are you trying to accomplish exactly?

Use WinSCP, connect to your server's IP and use your SSH user/pass. And you're in. There shouldn't be any further configuration

As a note, unrestricted plaintext ftp access to / is quite possibly one of the stupidest ideas on earth. Just saying.

Just pick scp or whatever. Leave the choices alone.

Is your server windows or nix, what specific OS?

Is the server limited to SSH1 protocol only? Try SSH1...

You need "Full Root Access" to the dedicated server. Is sudo being used? Also make sure you're using the right SSH Port#.

And why are you with current provider if they won't help you with any of this? Doesn't make sense...

Windows doesn't has ssh. Either ftp if you don't first add
    permissions on a user.

Install a FTP server first. If you don't have already. The Microsoft's default or a freeware/other.

Filezilla has a free nice working ftp server, http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server for example.

    Simple as that.

You of course need to configurate it first.

Also i am not sure that you are able to run a server when you already need so much help at basic tasks.
