Backing up of servers (images) in a rack
Hey,
We are looking into the best solution where we can backup all servers (images) that is in our data centre racks.
One of the best solution we have so far is getting a server with ample disk space, and using R1Soft Enterprise to actually create the images.
Do you guys have a better solution that this?
I'm looking at NAS, is NAS just like a storage space? Can NAS device helps anyway in this case?

R1Soft is great if you need to be able to perform a bare meatal restore of a server, if you only need something like file level backusp you could use "rsync" etc... However it does make the restore process a lot more time consuming.
A NAS is basically just a shared hard drive on the network, you just use it as the backup location, some come with software but it's normally not too good.BotWars.io - Code the AI of your Battle Bot!

r1soft is great if you don't mind the cost. can easily enough build a server with a bunch of 1-3tb drives in raid 5 or 10.

Thanks! guys.
For a single rack, how do you link up all the server to a main central server for the replication of R1soft?

You could use drbd which makes a clone of the file system at the block level to another host. This is a close to real time thing so is not the same as a backup in that if a user deleted his files from the primary server they will be deleted from the clone also. That said you could use periodic snapshots in conjunction with drbd if needed.

You don't say if it is *nix or Windows, I am guessing it is nix, I have found that Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery for Windows is a amazing product for Windows systems.

Thanks.
Besides R1Soft, is there any software (cheaper alternative) available to do a bare-metal backup of a Linux VPS onto attached harddisk drive? (something like Windows Backup/Restore.
Most leased version from R1Soft is the Enterprise version, which installs the server and agent seperately, but we are looking at one with backs up to an attached harddisk instead.
Anyone has good solution to recommend?

Thanks, but Bacula is more a network based client/server based. I just need a server stand-alone based backup software.
