Looking for an affordable ASP.NET/SQL Server hosting
I am working with a freelancer who needs access to a staging server to upload his day to day work. I need a cheap web hosting for .NET/SQL Server for a temporary basis (for a few months till the project is completed).
Any recommendations are really appreciated!

I've used crystaltech.com in the past with positive results.

If it's on a temporary basis, I suggest you take what's cheapest. You will find in this forum everything you need.
However, I do not know if you'll find hosting for only a few months.Windows Hosting - Don't pay for what you don't need!
BlogEngine.NET Hosting - Create a great looking blog in minutes, with no technical skills required!

For something small and inexpensive I would recommend winhost. I've never had a problem with their services, and the price has always been good when I need to do something on the inexpensive side.

It appears that Winhost requires me to either have my own domain or purchase a domain from them. Since this is for temp use, I don't need a domain address.
Can winhost create a temporary one? I know other providers do.

I work at WinHost and can answer you.
Yes, a domain name is needed at the time of sign up. If you don't want to register a new one, then you can sign up using a domain name that you already own, but don't worry, we don't auto-update the DNS so nothing will happen to the site/domain name(in fact, you never have to update the DNS to point to our name servers if you don't want to).
After sign up, we provide all hosting accounts with a secondary FTP address and secondary URL, which you can use to upload and view your site.
Hope this helps.Barry - WinHost

since you will only need a short period service, the price won't be as cheap as yearly paid hosting. have you finished the search?

It will be difficult to identify a ASP.NET hosting cheaper at monthly basis. However, you may opt for atleast 1 year plan to avail cheap asp.net hosting from a reliable host provider, rather than land on a inexperienced one for short period.
