I'm not so sure that this is a good benchmark.
I'm getting 83MB/sec testing on my local VPS here which is basically on a test bed comprising of a 16 core server connected via 10GE to a Equalogic SAN which has 16x15K drives in it doing NOTHING. My own testing shows it's capable of doing over 400MB/sec.0

Any reason why XEN VPS' seem to get 10-25x faster I/O speeds than OpenVZ? :/

Might as well jump in on the bandwagon once again, ..despite dd not being any valid test whatsoever for I/O.

The response I got from 123systems.net was:
"43.6MB/s actually isn't "that" bad considering the fact these are 3Ware based RAID cards."
Does that mean a poor quality RAID card (is 3Ware software or hardware?) is to blame? Guess in that case there is nothing they can do to improve it.
Update: Now I am even getting in the 20mb/s range which can actually start causing problems:
Code:root@d4m1r:/etc# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync && rm -f test 16384+0 records in 16384+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 39.8595 s, 26.9 MB/s

3ware aka LSI makes very good hardware raid cards. DD just is not a good I/O test, it only tests sequential writes and not random which is how your data is actually accessed. Most cards/raid are configured to deliver random I/O and not sequential, that's why you get a lower test number with dd typically than your actual I/O is.
