    Question about Hawkhost and MDDHosting

    Hello everybody,

After quite some browsing, checking details, comparing offers, etc, I got to narrow it all to these two hostings. I am seeing many great others with good reputation, excellent specs, etc. Is just that for the specific needs of certain two projects, seems one of these is going to suit the task.

My main two concerns remaining (as the other needs are covered by specs, etc) are uptime and image loading speed, and also general response speed.(for loading pages, etc) I am going to create a pretty image heavy, often updated site, hosting big images. (illustration related).

Are these two fast in image loading? I guess it does not matter much if it's images or whatever, once the server is fast.

    Thank you in advance!

My guess is you're looking for something semi dedicated at least, am I right? both companies offer that service, and both have great reviews. Have you tried to contact their sales dept?

They both have good reputations here. I'm with MDDHosting for a VPS, and can recommend on the basis of good support (I haven't tried their shared hosting product.)

MDDHosting does have links to Pingdom uptime reports for all their servers in their forums, so you can check those. I like the fact that MDD seems to put everything out there; they are honest about being a small company, have their forums open to the public, etc.

I would start a dialog with both via their ticket systems and try to narrow it down by noting which company's responses seem to fit your style better. Based on the reputation of Hawkhost here, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

    I don't think HawkHost offer Semi-Dedicated services.

Both great providers! I've never used HawkHost so I can't comment, but I have used MDD....and they're excellent!

Actually it also depends on what do you interpret by "Semi-Dedicated" plans.

Firstly you have to look at the shared server's specifications, including the CPU, RAM and HDD being used. Some companies will use a lower specification servers but place less accounts in it for "Semi-Dedicated" plans.

Secondly you will have to see roughly how many accounts are placed (or going to be placed) on the server. Some companies will place only 20 to 30 accounts while others may place 100+ accounts.

That doesn't even matter, because HawkHost don't offer any account/vps/server with Semi-Dedicated in the name.

It is actually a more general statement since many in WHT are confused about "Semi-Dedicated" plans.

I think in this situation its not really a matter of which web host you should go with (as from what I hear, both are great providers). Instead, its a matter of which web hosting package you should sign-up with (to insure the best performance for your website). I recommend contacting both hosts, let them know the specs of your website and have them recommend the best web hosting package for your website. Once you have the information from both web hosts, compare the info and figure out which one you feel will work best for your site.

I do agree with Fernando that the key here is to match your specific requirements to each of these providers services. Both have great reputations - it will probably come down to which do you perceive (after talking to each) will be the better of the two to work with. I'm sure you'll be fine either way.

Thank you all for such a great help here.

Actually, I was more in the doubt of, while being exceptional hosting companies (I had already long checked a lot of info, not only at WHT, but in many other forums, blogs , comments, reviews, all what Google would take me at, the amount of good feedback on these two is amazing) it could happen that a lot of people would not care so much about speed or images loading, and whichever of them could be a bit slow. Seems is not the case, by any means, as after asking, been seing how too much people report about the speed of both.

I am heading to do a Webcomic, better said, one updated frequently, other even monthly or more (I'm an old, experienced illustrator/comic designer, and some other things related...though I earn my plate as a designer/html-css coder) and, maybe, later on, a small portfolio site. All will be static html. (I generate the gallery/comic system with some code by my own, at my machine, then I upload as static html/css, no cpu server usage, no mysql/php etc. )

I have been reading how much bandwidth webcomics do eat, even with just a few fans. So I am mainly targetting the most bandwidth possible, provided the server is good. With a great price, MDDHosting basic account gives me 240 GB/month, and it has all the features I wanted (able to park several domains, enough space for my needs, etc, etc)

I got the data that convinced me at last a bit after posting this question. And all what you say here matches perfectly with it: Both hostings are absolutely great. So I'll just go with the biggest bandwidth here. I would feel bad wasting the time of their owners or support team asking to any of them, as have I read, one sleeps almost nothing, and the other one, possibly, as also does a great suport here and everywhere. I have now the thing pretty clear, so I'll just register an account.

This thread has helped me a lot in removing away my fears about both servers' speed.

Thanks a lot, am a long time reader here, loving WHT forums!

PD: About the VPS, or other greater package than just shared, I'll start small , first, I might end up with 10 readers, after all

It's not wasting time at all - we wouldn't have a department for sales inquiries if it were a burden .

You'll be quite happy with MDD - I'd suggest you start with the smallest tier plan however as people generally over estimate the amount of resources they will use. If you need more you can always upgrade to the next plan.

    Both are fine.
Both made my suggestions list, and I'm rather picky.

You know, I have worked in support, and also as a webmaster -which partly I am now- and I know the pains . Besides, more or less one can handle, so I'm usually not bugging suport (or sales) unless is something completely out of my possibilities . And I would like everybody would sleep at least 8 hours...Just because I don't

Yes, went with the basic one, as actually it has enough bandwitdh for "a case of success" (lol, as if weren't super hard to get a small fraction of that traffic ..though comics do really eat a lot of bandwidth. )

I am really happy that we can count with two hostings like these, I usually recoomend Hawk to anyone that asks me... (some ended as Hawk Host clients )

Thank you, rgenzon... I might go VPS someday (have some little linux knowledge), but I see that day far. I wont be using cpu for anything, no mysql/php, as I generate it and upload static, so... Is mostly whatever the images will use of bandwidth, and perhaps, the concurrent petitions to those(just as html , css and graphics files), If I get to be that succesful *cough*.

Both hosts get excellent reviews here and elsewhere so I'm certain you will be happy with either host.

Any specific reason? Have you used MDDHosting?

Just saying that you prefer someone without giving any other information doesn't really help.
