    Installing DNS on a VPS

    Hi!

I've been trying to configure DNS on my VPS for the last few hours and I just can't get it to work even though I've been googling like crazy. Is anyone here willing to help me out?

    Regards,

    Get webmin?
How can you factor in VAT when comparing since you are subject to VAT on everything? Obviously purchases made outside the EU are not going to be collected with VAT, but are you not still responsible to pay it on your own? - Tim Flavin from "Hostigation.com"

Tell us about your current VPS environment first. Do you already have a control panel installed?

I don't have a control panel installed, I'm trying to install everything with SSH. Should I get some control panel instead? What control panel in that case? Preferably for free or an one-time cost. By the way, it's only 512MB RAM so I'd prefer something pretty light-weight.

Get Webmin for easer administration. If you not familiar with CLI, webmin will make some nice tune in comfort point.

Yeah, I got webmin now and I'm trying to fix the DNS using it but I just can't get it to work even after re-installing the VPS to set everything to default. Hm.

I know you didn't ask for other solutions, but consider getting some DNS hosting (NameCheap, amongst many, offer this for free).
Their DNS servers are actually mirrored/redundant and it's a small load off your VPS.

Oh, my domain is on Namecheap. How would I use their DNS servers properly? I decided to get my own name servers since every time I tried to just use Namecheaps, I could go to example.com but not example.com/test.php. I'd just get forwarded to the IP.

I'm using them and it's working perfectly fine for me.
Make sure you're actually setting A addresses, not URL redirects or URL frames or any of that nonsense.

Here's a guide I googled for you, see if it helps:
    http://fastdot.co.uk/dns-management/...echeapcom.html

If the above still doesn't solve your problems, why don't you screenshot your current NameCheap DNS configuration and share it?

You can install Cpanel DNS only

    http://httpupdate.cpanel.net/

Agree with tsj5j that using dns of domain provider is a better solution if private nameserver is not required.
