Devry is worthless, enough said. You will get a much better education, a much better looking degree, and a CHEAPER experience (Usually) by going to a standard 4 year university.

In the IT field, certifications (AFAIK) are a GREAT way to showcase your skills. I say go to community college to get your Gen Ed classes done, get certifications while you're doing it, and eventually transfer to a 4 year to get your engineering degree.

    Just my opinion.

Try to get the CCNA or Network+ that would be a great start. Don't go to any of those ripoff private technical school. Its gonna cost you thousands. I've been there and done that now I'm regretting, should've went to a standard 4 year university.

Generally, online colleges do not have a good reputation. They end up costing a lot and their degrees are not valued as much as regular colleges'.

I agree - this is the best path to take, you're going to want to go to a standard 4 year school ultimately.

I very much agree. I wrote my honors thesis on the topic of online universities, and I reached generally the same conclusions.

You want to get either FAIK or Network+.

Schools like Devry are meaningless they are more of a business than providing you with an education. I think an accredited trade school or local community college would be better. Then get into a university.

Online colleges are great for people like me though who are to busy to take in person courses of course most colleges offer this now a days. Though never be afraid to take an online course or degree if it is free, the more knowledge you have the more in demand you become. It is not always about all those certifications but rather what you can demonstrate in person.

Someone might have a degree however they don't know how to use it. Having that paper does help with getting in the door though.

Certifications like Network+ have virtually no weight in the IT field, it's an entry level certificate to learn the basics.

If you want entry level you should consider the CCENT (Entry Networking Technician), but would probably opt to bypass it and go for the CCNA (Network Associate). Then you can move into CCNP.

The Cisco certifications (from my experience) hold a good deal of weight in the field. I work along side a CCIE (expert level certification), he could leave our place today and have a new job by tonight earning a six figure income anywhere in the country.

It's about supply and demand, some certifications are over saturated, thus are essentially worthless to some degree, I hold several of said certifications and don't even bother putting them on my resume anymore.

I highly agree. Some of the certificates available - though by no means all of them - are of pretty low academic quality, too. It can vary.

In my mind, I tend to give some weight to many of the Cisco, Red Hat, and Microsoft certifications. I tend to be so-so on many of the others.
