Thumbs up Texas and Kansas -- 85mph speed limits? :D

    http://www.usatoday.com/_ads/interst...limit-85_N.htm

    Enough said!

This would be very cool for road trips.

On a related note, I read an interesting opinion article today about raising the limit to 150mph.

Nice article. Sadly, I doubt we'll see 150mph.

    One can hope, though!

Yeah, that's probably a bit too radical. Even a 85mph speed limit would be nice in California though especially on the I-5N all the way up to Canada. I drove up on that freeway 2 summers ago and it was a great road trip. Two lanes for most of the way, right lane people avg the speed limit of 70mph and the left lane was averaging about 90mph+.

Is it just me, or are California drivers better than Texas drivers?

I'm used to a ton of slowdowns on the major interstates in Texas, even when traffic is fairly light. :/ There's always someone blocking the left lane ...

Oh, I wouldn't say California drivers are any better... I've seen some pretty horrendous driving. Slowdowns are also pretty bad here especially in areas like LA but I guess that's due to traffic usually.

I definitely don't think California drivers are better than Texas drivers, but couldn't agree more about someone blocking the left lane. I've started driving in the right lane more; it seems to be the new left!

150 MPH is high for the USA because the road infrastructure is not designed for that speed. The reason you can go 150 MPH on the Autobahn is not just because of the cars, the road it self is better, its maintained to a much higher standard, and its like 6 times as thick as a typical US highway (18 - 30 inches I think).

Tho I think we could see 100 MPH limit here on some roads at some point. I would love 100 MPH speed limit, my bike runs so good at 100.

Before all this happens of course we need to get these crappy cars off the road that can barley do 70. Make it harder to get a license, and require a 3 day drives course to get that license.

I average about 80-85 on the highway so that's ideal for me.

The fast lane here around Boston average driver is 80 mph. If your driving slower they tend to move to the right lane. State Police on the highways around here will not pull you over for going 80 however 85 they will, at least thats my luck. I'm sure others have had different stories around this area but my personal experience says 80 is comfort.

Does your luck involve not being pulled over at 80mph, being pulled over at 85mph, or both?

I couldn't tell if this was a "I wasn't pulled over (and I drove at 80)" or a "I was pulled over (and I drove at 85)" piece of advice.

lol. Well I was driving exactly 82 yesterday right outside of Boston and someone behind me flashed me. I moved over and it was a state police. I also was going more than 80 when a state police was on the side of the highway and I drove past them maintaining my speed.

On the other hand I got pulled over at 90, and at 87 in the past. So I would say 80 is safe.

What?! A state police car flashed you for going too slow (?) at 82?

That's crazy. Your police must have a lot of muscle!

Yeah it was strange, I didn't think it was a state police becasue the window tint on the car behind me was weak but surely as I pulled to the center lane he was...

It's Texas drivers, they're just horrible. Seriously, I swear people here must mistaken the brake pedal for the gas pedal at times.

150mph would simply make it more dangerous since some people don't know how to control their speeds or have perception issues. 85mph sounds good though. Wasn't 85 before they lowered it to like 65?

Same thing here in Indiana ... When I head down to Tennessee to visit the in-laws it's 2 lanes 95% of the way and all the way through Indiana there are constantly people doing 55~65 in the left lane (when the limit is 70). Dare I say we cross the line into Kentucky and it's smooth sailing all the way down to Tennessee where everybody drives in every lane but they're all haulin'.

85mph should be just fine for current standards , 150mph, well the 2000 model v6 accord could not go beyond 120mph, it becomes sluggish like after 100 , shakes a lot at 120 definitely it is the road and part car , i could see see some very small cars on the road side flipped over on the road to vegas from LA , can be due to wind + speed at which he was going, seen this kind of things like once or twice , so , well back in europe people leave the speed lane once they pass the slow car , but here it is not like that, well if the roads change, may be people would change too, It is a different kind of problem in India, although i can overtake a car on my own lane, i still need to flash or honk to make sure he does not take a step of changing lanes while am passing him, because there is no highway police yet to the new Airport road they have constructed in Hyderabad ( India) , 4+4 lane (posted speed limit 60kmph), i could go higher speeds, like 135mph, some part of road strips there is shake but some parts no vibration no shakes nothing up to 110-120. this is on a old LS400 , it has some speed limit chip not to cross 135mph. am sure it can go beyond, once i was passed by a latest accord must be v6 at above 135mph , anyways we need more smooth roads for higher speeds, i guess more foundation too ,

It definitely depends on the state. As someone who has driven in Kentucky and Tennessee multiple times, I can confirm that people in Tennessee drive casually in the left lane, and I usually end up doing a lot of flashing I also seem to have that problem in Pennsylvania.

Ugh I cannot stand those people! If you're doing 65 mph going down 75, do NOT get in my left lane!!!

" A 2008 study by the Texas Transportation Institute, a research arm of Texas A&M University, found that in the 16 months after the increase, average speeds increased by 9 mph on one highway and by 4 mph on the other. "
Well , Erm? Isnt that a given that speeds will increase if the speed limit has been increased?

Thats like saying , Research shows that a fire feels hotter if the fire is bigger OR The faster you fall means your falling faster.
