Plesk or cPanel for a personal VPS?
Hi,
I'm about to get a linux VPS for private use. However I'm not sure which control panel to choose - the hosting provider I'll be using offers both cPanel and Plesk. All my mail is already hosted with Google Apps, and all my sites are powered by WordPress. I don't need to host any clients or any other fancy hosting-related features.
I currently don't have any particular CP preference, so I guess what it comes down to is which panel uses less resources in that particular VM environment (Parallels).
So, which is it?
Thanks in advance.

If those are the only 2 options, I would go with cPanel. Otherwise, I would suggest DirectAdmin if it's an option available to you. Never liked Plesk, though that was a while back. I don't have experience with their current version.

If it's resources you're worried about, DirectAdmin is a great option as WickedFactor suggested while being just as feature-filled as cPanel (if not more in some ways).

+1 for DirectAdmin, if only for the lower resource usage and flexibility of the backup system. Plus John and Mark are both great guys and go the extra mile on support

Cpanel +1, especially with the easy to use account transfer tools etc should you wish to migrate. Also easier to get support on it since the half the world seems to be using it!

i've been using plesk for years now and although i much prefer the layout and design of the control panel, i've had nothing but dramas with it when upgrading. although im not saying cpanel would be any better.
and getting support from parallels was hopeless. rediculous off topic advice.

Like everyone has pointed out, cPanel is pretty much the gold standard -- but if its just for private use and Plesk is cheaper, that's something to consider.

As this is just for a personal website, then I'd recommend DirectAdmin. It costs less than the two you mentioned and uses very little resources.
If the control panel is free with your VPS then go for cPanel.

I would have to go with cPanel on this one as well. Maybe ask your potential host which one is free and roll with that for a little while and see how you like it.

cPanel beats Plesk by far in my opinion.
However, I am a great fan of DirectAdmin.

I've come to the conclusion that Plesk/Linux (Apache) has performance issues.
cPanel/Linux seems to be more stable.
Plesk/Windows is fine, however -- the best Windows panel.
None of the issues exist on IIS as I've seen on the Apache version.|| Need a good host?

I'd also recommend DA. If you're used to cPanel interface, use cPanel.

Thanks everyone for the advice. The hosting provider also recommended cPanel, so that's what I went with.

Definitely cPanel. It's fast, stable and offer free migration if you have root access to you previous hosting account, which is nice.
Plesk is very buggy in my opinion and slow even on a very good hardware. As for Directadmin, Cinderella of famous control panels ;-), I can only recommend to more experienced users. It's not slow or buggy, but definitely more complicated and I guess with less features than cPanel.
Also not all third-party applications support directadmin or plesk but that depends on specific needs of course.
