The onAPP software is not the expensive part of the cloud. its the SAN and (and redundant SAN) thats the killer. You can't go cheap here either. You can get a license for Open-E or Starwind free for a year thru onAPP, but you have to spend some good money for quality hardware.

Regarding the installation part of the Onapp setup:
You will get a brief document from them with what needs to be in place before they do the rest of the installation. It's pretty easy stuff; install centos and update it.
The only tricky part is the network setup. You need a few different networks and depending on your exisiting network layout you may need to some reconfiguring.

Your right you will need 4 servers and one NAS to start. This can be found on the hardware requirements on their site.
Looks like hardware is half the story the network has to be setup in a specific way in order for the application to work correctly. This includes two firewalls, a SAN a public network and a backup network. I found this on their site under how it works network.
Looks like a lot of work however, if you can build a business like vps.net it may be worth it.
Good Luck

Will highly recommend a good management Gigabit Switch for a start, at least layer 2, support jumbo frames and that can show whats going on, this can be one of the most important aspect of the installation.

Yeah besides the SAN you will need multiple servers for processing, backup and controlling your platform. You will need a NFS share for your backups, an IPv4 stack you can use for distribution to your vm's (dont forget IPv6 which will be available for distribution through OnApp in Q3) and some decent knowledge on how to run a cloud hosting business.

For the SAN I would also recommend having dual gigabit switch for multipathing which will double your bandwidth at a very low extra money.
