    which server should i pick

i am looking a server (west coast) to host 2 forum. After reading here and i come to this option.

    1. quadranet
4x Hot-Swap HDD Bay Supermicro Server
    Intel Xeon X3220 Quad Core - 2.4Ghz, 8MB Cache, 1066FSB
    8GB DDR2-667 RAM
    500GB SATA2 7,200RPM HDD
    500GB SATA2 7,200RPM HDD
    500GB SATA2 7,200RPM HDD
    500GB SATA2 7,200RPM HDD (4x)
Software RAID-0, RAID-1, or No RAID

    2. webnx
    i7 860 (4 / 8HT cores at 2.8ghz) 16gb ram, 2x 1TB w/ raid 1

both have the same price and good rep here
i7 860 has more cpu power but i think quadranet offers more server management feature in their member portal.

    TIA

I haven't had any experience with either of providers - however, I'll recommend webnx server if you are going to get hardware raid. If possible for your budget, I'll also recommend getting couple of more HDD's and instead setup RAID 10 which will make your server good enough with regards to processing power, memory and disk i/o.

WebNX offers both hardware raid-1 and more RAM. If the price are same, my pick would be Webnx

if both servers are the same price i would pick the Webnx server, as it seems to have better specs...

webnx also most likely has DDR3 ram vs DDR2 from quadranet.

You're looking at two different factors:

    1) different servers
    2) different providers

If your application is bottlenecking on disk i/o, the quadranet box is better since it has 4 drives. For all other use cases, the webnx server is better.

Then comes the provider. Which is better? I know Quadranet is a good provider from my experience with them. I've heard good things about webnx but have no personal experience with them.

Which of the two factors is more important to you?

I would second what xema said, the i7 has DDR3, not DDR2 - as well as having twice as much

Lol, Intel Xeon X3220 processor 4 - 5 years old. It is like i3 550 dual core processor...

But... If you host forums, you need good r/w performance, so RAID 10 best solution for you.

What can i say, if webnx can offer you RAID 10 ( 4 x 1TB ), pay more and go with them.

    the top output
    top - 15:40:11 up 95 days, 12:40, 1 user, load average: 1.03, 0.84, 0.93
    Tasks: 152 total, 4 running, 147 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie
    Cpu(s): 57.4%us, 1.2%sy, 0.0%ni, 40.9%id, 0.4%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st
    Mem: 4050944k total, 3755272k used, 295672k free, 157380k buffers
    Swap: 1052248k total, 198548k used, 853700k free, 2391252k cached
x3220 is enough, load is about 1 and cpu 40% idle. i guess adding ram to 8gb and raid will increase performace.

do you have other suggestion to get better performace?
