Well I have been thinking of the idea of a home data center, first I would want to get off the plate is money is not the issue. I just need a place to start/plan. Where could I get the equipment and brains for a project like this?
We have a small data center at our site (as well as colo in other facilities) and even though our datacenter cost quite alot. Raised floors, redundant AC, multiple fiber feeds (pending) it is stil no where neer a real data center. For one most datacenters have multiple power feeds from different substations and N+1 power generators as backup.
The fiber installs for our data center were 40K each (for 2 redundent paths) then we have to add fiber lease rates to providers. Fiber paths to residences are even more expensive as they are often a long distance from your providers.
Now that said. If all you are looking at doing is build something that can house a few machines on a single feed from a home provider (FIOS, UVerse etc) and make it better than a machine in your bedroom. There are things you can do.
1) Good quality UPS. 2) AC Unit(s) 3) Home backup generator (most are natural gas powered.) it just depends on what you are hoping to achive.
Starting your own colocation centre is a risk. I know you said money is not an issue but you will need to invest a lot before you begin, and then hope that you can attract customers to use your colo centre.
If money is no object then you should be able to build a real datacenter at somewhere other than your house. If you are looking to move on from someone else's colo you should see about getting a suite with a company that basically sells datacenter pods that have all the power and cooling infrastructure built out, all you need to do is provide cabinets and the network aspect.
On the absolute low end, you will be spending around $150-200 per square foot. Here is just a small list of the things you would have to do:
1. Get the utility provider to run more power to your house, and wire in 3-phase if you don't already have it (older houses probably won't). This is not cheap. You pretty much have to use 3-phase, because you won't find much "data center grade" equipment that will run on single-phase power. Your residential power rates are very likely much higher than you can negotiate for a commercial account - possibly up to two times as much or more.
2. Get a fiber provider to run fiber to your house. Good luck.
3. Find space for power and cooling equipment. Even on a small scale, you'll need a few hundred square feet dedicated to this. Have an electrician install it all.
4. Get permits and inspections from the city for anything you do.
If you're dead set on building a data center, do it right and find a real commercial space. Doing it out of a residential building is a bad idea from square one. The cost of the actual physical space ends up being extremely minimal among all of your other costs.

Because there is much more to colocation than a room. As others have pointed out, bandwidth, power, cooling, staffing, etc . . . is usually problematic in a residential situation. By the time you add everything up and couple that with limited expansion capability, you're beyond a " fun project" and moving into the realm of "waste of money".
