Thumbs down Centova. Are they a joke ?

Searching for a panel for shoutcast streaming I found Centova Cast.

I saw their forums, a few positive comments, so I decided to get a licence
    to try it myself.

From their site I've placed an order. And now the good part.

They pass the account for activation. The good one, I neved got an email.
So I say, let's wait a few days. 3 days later I decided to contact them through
their helpdesk. I ticket was created, 6 days passed (plus the 3 from the order).

I got no answer. Zero. Zip. Nothing. I tried to contact them again from another email, another 2 days passed, nothing.

Then, what else I could do, I thought that might something doesn't work right and they don't get emails... Who knows...

I tried to register to their forums to ask them there... It requires an activation email.
    Never came.

Tried 3 different mail providers plus my private one. 4 different providers total, in 4 different domains / servers / places in the world.
Tried to resend the activation link two and three times. Nothing.

Not even one email from them, their support, helpdesk, forum, NOT EVEN THEIR BILLING SYSTEM.

It's ridiculous, I WANT TO BUY SOMETHING AND THEY DONT EVEN CARE.

Are they for real ? Just wondering if someone from here is client there and knows if the whole company suffered nuclear attack, terrorism or something else...

    Angry

I'm experiencing the exact same problem, and it seems according to the centova forums, so are others.

I just paid for an annual license for Centova Cast -- My payment was taken instantly, but i've been stuck on Pending Approval ever since. I've tried emailing support with no answer, registering on their forums is a no-no because the activation email never comes.

I don't know what is going on, and to be honest, I'm extremely annoyed at the lack of professionalism and support that I was expecting from Centova Cast.

They're registered on the forums here, I wonder if they'll bother to reply and just inform us as to what is going on!!

All I want is the product I paid for. I don't want any special treatment, i JUST want the license!

    Regards,

    Disgruntled Dave

I'd love to tell you guys your experience is going to change, but... I doubt it will improve. I own several large streaming providers with quite a few Centova licenses. I've found their support very snotty/rude and they never seem to have any problems that are their fault. Unfortunately, the only reason we still use them is that they are the only really decent control panel for the market. If that ever changes, we're done. I'm sure that'd go for a lot of others as well.

Why don't you guys try WHMSonic? I use them all the time with no issues.

I'm not a fan, personally. I don't really want to install cPanel on every box we use for streaming. We don't need tons of services and other things running that don't need to be. I prefer to keep the servers as light weight and secure as possible.

Really?? So this isn't just a new occurrence.. That really is a shame because the software looks so damn good!

All I really want cast control for is the simplicity of the Auto DJ for my radio station. Installing cPanel etc is a bit too far to go for a small project like this.

That's what is hard about it. The software IS good for the most part. Sure, there's some bug which need to be worked out... It really is the support that makes it rough. They have a good product, they just need to learn how to take care of things properly.

I could understand a bit of a delay with a support request, but a delay while waiting for a license that was paid for 12 months in advance, instantly after ordering? Just awful business practice.

Looks like I'm going to have to initiate a PayPal dispute to get my cash back and try my luck with ices playlists.

This is the second week without a response..
Third week is coming... still waiting.

I already looking for something else, I don't want to have a product which
if I need support for it I'll have to wait for months...

But still, it's ridiculous. 13 days without a response on the order, the tickets or the forum verification email.

    Nearly two weeks??

I wonder what is going on with the people at Centova, and more worryingly, what will happen with those people that DO have licenses. Will they all of a sudden stop working one day?

    Good luck chrismfz!

    Heh, thanks.

I am already looking for something else, I just wait
to see when they will respond, just for fun. Counting...

If anyone knows any other good panel which doesn't need
cPanel or anything else like WHMSonic and it's standalone,
    feel free to share :-)

Just curious, have you guys logged in to their website and checked your ticket status at all? Make sure you check out "closed tickets" as your ticket will likely be closed due to inactivity. I know sometimes we submit a ticket and I don't receive an email - however, I login later on to see that they DID reply. I don't have any spam filters, so I'm not sure what the deal is exactly. It's just another thought.

They've also stated before that the forums are not staff monitored and not to expect staff response, so I wouldn't use that for any type of communication to them.

You guys have me curious now. I can't believe they'd release version 3.0 and then bail, that wouldn't make sense. It's been in development for like two years without any updates. I think I'll submit a ticket to see where it gets me.

To follow up, I submitted a ticket after this post and already have a response. They said they are extremely overwhelmed due to Centova 3.0 and apologized to everyone for the delay. We're a VIP/reseller of Centova - if you guys want, I can check to see what's up with your orders as long as that does not violate any WHT policies. Just let me know your ticket numbers with Centova and I'll see if I can't help out at all. To be clear - I don't want any of your personal information. Mods, if this is against the rules please feel free to delete this post.

Also, curious - did you guys both order installations? It sounds like that is what is taking so long. Let me know.

    Hi Breck,

Yep, i've submitted 3 tickets, none of them have been replied to. I had heard that they had been having problems with emails not being received, so I have been checking online, and they're still unanswered.

I didn't order an installation, just the license for 12 Months. Which has been pending approval ever since.

Ooh. Update... The license is now activated

I am extremely disappointed. I have reopened an installation ticket from February and received no reply in 4+ days. My daughter has brain cancer and I've been living in a hospital. I get back into the office and begin setting up Centova and discover that although they turned on Icecast (as we wanted) they did not install it. They turned off Shoutcast but installed it. I have telephoned and get a recording. I have faxed and received no answer. I have emailed several addresses that apparently open new tickets -- that also haven't been answered. I paid them nearly $400 for an owned license after over a year of trying a leased license. I too have found at least one of their support staff rude, condescending and just plain a butt wrinkle. His posted excuse is that he has been unavailable for 11 days because of a serious personal matter and his "staff" did not do their jobs and have been fired. Hmm... staff?

I am trying to figure out how to install Icecast on a stripped down Virtuozzo container with CentOS 5.5. I'll do the damn work myself if I have to, but I should get what I paid for. My bad for having a gravely ill child and not noticing the simple error sooner. We chatted politely back and forth for a couple of days re: Virtuozzo and Icecast, so I don't want to read any crap about it not being clear. We deactivated a leased license with Icecast and replaced it with an owned license with Icecast. Waz up?

I am not hard to please but I am not happy. I will do a chargeback if I need to because there is simply no excuse for such poor customer service.

When I try to install Icecast on my own I get the following

    Code:
    yum install rpm-devel rpm-libs rpm-build libvorbis-devel libogg-devel curl-devel libxslt-devel libtheora-devel speex-devel
    ...
    ...
    ...
    --> Finished Dependency Resolution
sqlite-devel-3.7.0.1-1.el5.art.i386 from atomic has depsolving problems
--> Missing Dependency: sqlite = 3.7.0.1-1.el5.art is needed by package sqlite-devel-3.7.0.1-1.el5.art.i386 (atomic)
Error: Missing Dependency: sqlite = 3.7.0.1-1.el5.art is needed by package sqlite-devel-3.7.0.1-1.el5.art.i386 (atomic)
You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
                            package-cleanup --dupes
                            rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
The program package-cleanup is found in the yum-utils package.

-bash-3.2# rpm -qa | grep sqlite
    sqlite-3.7.0.1-1.el5.art.art
    python-sqlite-1.1.7-1.2.1
From what I can see sqlite IS installed.

Error: Missing Dependency: sqlite = 3.7.0.1-1.el5.art is needed by package sqlite-devel-3.7.0.1-1.el5.art.i386

    What am I missing?

I exited the shoutcast market last year and I noticed it was getting fairly bad back then, very little responce.

WHMSonic I had an even worse experience with, they do reply but they may as well not bother. the WHMCS module hardly works and I found a LOT of issues with their software (although it does look good)

Never tried castcontrol but I think the market could use a new major player in the market.

I was able to get Icecast nstalled but Centova isn't reading the log files and reporting statistics. I need to locate in the Centova setup where it wants to find log files. I used the standard /var/log/icecast.

We're in a niche market where there is actually some demand for audio hosting, especially real-time. We like Centova Cast and I truly hope that whatever mess Steve is dealing with he gets out of soon. But ignoring paid customers just isn't cool.

Well, since I had my license activated, I have still not been able to use Centova cast. The install went without issue, and starting centova up I was able to log in..

However, something was not quite right, and a server restart was required. BAD MOVE. Centova wouldn't start up after that and kept telling me my license update failed, and refused to run completely.

I've had a ticket with support since the 8th April, with what seemed to be a response which completely avoided my issue. Something about having made some changes to my account, and it should now work.. After it didn't, I replied straight away, and now I'm STILL waiting for a response.

I have a new station launching this Friday and I REALLY need CC running for this date. I hope I get an extra month on my license considering the fact I can't use it yet.

Yes, we do need another major player. I hope the open source community start to pick up on this, it could be the next big thing! Heck, I'll even help develop it!

It has been nearly three weeks and my tickets still have not been answered. They use a ticketing system and email should not be the issue. There may be a very legitimate rason for this - perhaps he's sick or ran afoul of the Canadian IRS. But frankly, this is just unacceptable.

I saw their forums, a few positive comments, so I decided to get a licence
    to try it myself.
I suppose that answers a lot of questions as on their forums they can moderate in the way they want or wish.
I suppose it will be surprise if you can find any negative reviews on their forums.

The software is good. It does what we need. But they didn't install Icecast and I was able to get it installed. I don't know if I got it installed the way that they want it and if statistics are recording properly. I'm an easy service ticket. But only easy if they take the time to reply. BTW, installing Icecast on a Virtuozzo VPS with Centos 5.5 is "fun." Harumph.

We have 2 owned licenses, one of them was brought the last month and it was an owned - 10 servers license. Today the license appears as expired and i'm getting this error:

    [/home/radios/public_html]# /home/centovacast/system/runascc/runascc exec ccmanage reissuelicense radios.hostname.fm:800
INF License reissuance forced; renewing license information (this may take a few moments) ...
OK Key updated; new renewal date: 2011-04-28 16:01:07
Already submited a ticket and tried to call their phone number several times, but we are unable to reach them.

I hate to say it, but it's looking more and more like that might be the case. I don't think they are intentionally going out of business, but I think the owner is having some problems in his real life. I don't know what they are; health, family, whatever... He posted a few weeks ago saying that he was having "serious personal issues". However, it seems things are taking a turn for the worst as nobody seems to be responding to any of our tickets at this point.

It also appears whatever handles their automated license renewal is having issues, so we are starting to foresee licensing issues up and coming shortly if something isn't done to correct the issue.

This is a rather big issue as the core of our product uses Centova. Of course there are options to migrate to a new product, but the alternatives are sub-par. We're attempting to find ways to reverse engineer the software for the time being, but it's a major challenge. Hopefully whoever runs Centova will just return and correct their mess.

I had a read of some comments in centova forums and it made me curious, i wasn't impressed.
On the other hand, the software sounds great, more features than whmsonic and stand-alone.
But i do like whmsonic even though we have to run cpanel with it.
A server should be capable of running cpanel as well as streaming software.
Dule cores with 2gb of ram will run both fine.
Bet i'm glad now i didn't go with centova after reading this.
    What a pitty though.

We had one license issue in the past for nonpayment, and our clients stayed up, although we were locked out of the reseller panel. What's going on that this is different now, and clients are being shutdown as well?

Clients are being shutdown as well...since the cron runs every 5 minutes, it kills the streams because of an expired license...dont know exactly whats going on but Centova better get their **** together or a big lawsuit may be coming their way.

I thought the same thing. I had seen people say how their servers got cut off, I thought I was safe with my owned licenses...nope. 12 out of 21 are down now. I stopped the crons on the others to keep them up.

Not sure what you mean by where its located.

For us, I installed it to /etc/crontab.

    Try looking for it:
    Code:
    crontab -e -u centovacast
    OR
    Code:
    nano /etc/crontab

Hmm...I dont think the cron is required. I know that if you have the cron enabled, it runs statistics, bandwidth checks, etc.

My system is a dedicated VPS and no control panel other than Centova. The bottom line is that we need to find out what has happened to the owner/customer service/installer/rude half the time developer.

Is there a phone-home IP address that might need to be blocked to keep Centova from shutting down?
