VPN / Proxy
Hello,
I have a dedicated server (in US) running Linux, and I was wandering if I could use this server as a VPN or proxy to access content from Hulu and similar sites from outside the USA (for personal use only).
Is this possible, and if yes, how to I go about it?
Thank you

I'd also recommend OpenVPN. It's easy to install and lightweight.

PPTP works fine as well. Less of a hassle.

Thank you guys. So I guess it could be done!
Could using a VPN create any server load or other issues on my server? Would there be any benefit in paying to get a VPN service instead of using my own server?

I highly recommend using your own.
For quick use PPTP is recommended (quick set-up and easy to use no configuration needed really) and it would suite your needs as your only going to be streaming Hulu you don't need the advantages that OpenVPN offers (like encryption)
In terms of server load, it won't really effect it, the main constraint is bandwidth and that won't be anything to worry about considering your only going to be streaming video which would push 1-3mb/s at maximum.
If you need help setting up PPTP send me a message, would only take me a couple seconds and you would be all set.
Good luck!

You shouldn't have any load problems unless you run Squid as proxy without proper setup. PPTP should be the best option for you.

Thank you guys. I will ask from my host to see if they can install it for me.
I've read a bit about PPTP vs openvpn. When they say that openvpn is more secure, do they mean about the client, or about the server as well (i.e would I increase the chances of my server being hacked if I install PPTP on it?)
If server security is not an issue then maybe I will go with PPTP which as you say is easier to install and from what I understand is easier to use with mobile devices.
I will need the VPN to access things like Hulu, and every now and then use it from my laptop or ipad when using public wifi to increase my security a bit.
Are there any specific settings or options that I need to ask for when setting up a VPN to make it better?

If all you want to do is browse websites then I'd suggest just using an SSH SOCKS tunnel.
You don't have to install any extra software and it will probably perform better than using openvpn, pptpd, or other heavier tunneling solutions.→ RAM Host -- USA Premium & Budget Linux Hosting

I tried the SSH SOCKS but for some reason it didn't work for some videos on Hulu. So it is back to VPN (I tried some free demo and VPN worked with all videos).
Are there any specific settings or options that I need to ask for when setting up a VPN to make it better?

Maybe you should have a look at the timeout / max filesize settings in case you have them enabled?

Stick to PPTP if you want the compatibility for iPhone/iPad devices.

PPTP is good for Windows clients, Plus the users can be easily added and most OS have clients for it built in.
OpenVPN is... OpenVPN, it can work - but most likely it wont.
User/Password auth is hard to setup.

OpenVPN is very easy to set up on a server. No user/password auth needed if you use OpenSSL certificates. Follow the HOWTO.
You will need to enable NAT in iptables for the VPN network.
You need a lot of bandwidth on your server to watch Hulu streaming videos over VPN. The problem with OpenVPN, IMHO, is that it's pretty slow. PPTP ain't much better. A lot of the problem has to do with latency and routing--good bandwidth costs good money. Where is your dedicated server hosted?
