How to Make Money With a Website (a serious question)

Quick background: I've been working in enterprise IT for 20+ years, and have a long background in Unix/Linux sysadmin. I presently work as a Oracle/MySQL DBA in my day job. I have some experience programming in popular web languages (PHP, Ruby, Perl), as well as the rudiments of Photoshop/web design (though I'd hardly call myself a web designer).

I make a comfortable living as an Oracle DBA, but am always looking for more ways to earn more. Just had a third child ;-) I have no problem running web sites/VPSes/etc. and Internet services in general, but don't really have any solid ideas on how to make money doing so.

I'm definitely not interested in running a web hosting business.

I have a variety of non-work interests, but all of them seem to have solid well-established forums.

I'm not looking to start the next Twitter or other major startup...just set up some pages/sites that generate some supplementary income.

I suspect ultimately the answer is publishing some kind of content. I'm not interested in handling porn. I'm not sure what this kind of content would be. It's pretty rare at this point that I have a technical question that I can't find answered in some kind of web search.

I know there are tens of thousands of VPSes in operation, and I can't imagine they're all people's game servers. I also can't imagine most of those people are major content publishers. What DO most people do with their hosting/shared/dedicated/VPS accounts?

I'm wondering if there is a good book with info on starting online businesses? Googling for such things results in a ton of schlocky get-rich-quick stuff which isn't what I'm after.

Feel free to say "well, duh, if we had an answer for you we'd all be doing it" :-) Just figured it couldn't hurt to ask...

I'm not sure but you could try something new like file hosting, image hosing. Or you could even open up a blog and have ads here and there and make some money from donations too. There has to be tons of thousands of ways to make money online I just don't know from scratch.

One idea to think about is setting up a blog in your area of expertise (obviously IT related issues). Post entries with comments from your perspective on the newest "thing" or your ideas on how to fix common technical problems you encounter. If it's interesting to you it'll be easier to keep going with it, and you may find a niche of people interested in what you have to say.

Eventually if you gain any sort of readership, you can use your statistics (ie: 100 unique visitors per day) to come to forums like these and offer advertising on your website. Obviously, the more your website is visited, the more money you will be able to charge for advertising.

Another idea perhaps is setting up a consulting company on the side? Set up a website and charge an hourly rate to help solve people's problems? I see people complaining around here that they can't find a PHP programmer, which I see you have some experience with.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head.

You skills as a consultant are probably a lot more valuable than any website you'd create. What about working for small local businesses on the side?

Take some knowledge you have and turn it into an informational site (blog, listing/directory), and monetize that site with ads. You can make a nice chunk of money on the side every month with just AdSense if you put up the right kind of sites.

I want to suggest you for running blogs on the subject in which you have interest. It is the most popular form of online making money. You can place google ads and other relevant ads on your blogs to earn money through blogging.

Let me hint this to you. If I had an idea, I would NOT tell you. Its a simple fact that the simplest idea's are the best and are the most profitable.

But you have to "Think out-side of the box and turn the corner". You really do have to sit on an idea for about 3/4 days before finding something that isn't already out there and making it your niche.

Google -> Simple idea -> Expanded to be one of the largest websites in the world.

Facebook -> Simple Idea -> Most used website in the world.

And if you have a simple idea, you keep it safe and YOU make it a reality. You then live off the money it makes for you. So my friend; this is a bit of dead end question. We as a community cannot tell you how to make money otherwise we would all be doing it

This is very true. We run about 40 ad supported informational sites. I've had some very innovative ideas on sites, and some ridiculously simple ones. About 80% of the income comes from our single simplest site.

Or possibly an e-book. Though I don't know how well they sell. Anyone have experience with one?

Try to stay away from affiliate programs to start with as a lot of them are a waste of time.

A lot of them can't be trusted. Just stick to Google Adsense if there's a lot of content on the pages.

You can start earning money from Adsense & Amazon with a website. It takes some time to run everything well if you're a beginner in these earning programs.

I would recommend you to make autoblogs and make money by affiliate programs and Adsense. It really works.

Express your expertise on a blog/how to website and sell your expertise to the visitors, visitors that needs some kind of help on the matter you know.

    This or nothing IMHO.

Create an online game where kids play free with restrictions or can join for $5 a month to gain perks and levels. Sit back and count the money. You know, like where they have to walk around a map from town to town earning funds to buy weapons and armor so they can duke it out and steal each other's stuff.
Hosting is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.
