    Supermicro CSE-731I-300B : misleading description

    Hello folks,

I just received my Supermicro CSE-731I-300B pedestal chassis.
Overall, I am VERY satisfied with it, except of one single thing :

Supermicro advertise that it comes with the PWS-303-PQ power supply. Upon checking power supply's description, it mentions that it comes with "1 x power 8 pin EPS12V with detachable 4 pin ATX12V section".

In fact, the power supply has a single 4 pin motherboard power cable. My motherboard requiring an 8 pins connector, I'm screwed.

Am I missing something - have I overlooked something? What shall I do? Buy a 4 to 8 pins adapter cable or report this to Supermicro?

    Cheers!

There's really no point to bump this topic.

As I stated, Supermicro's chassis' description (the link you've provided) doesn't cover power supply's connectors. Googling power supply's model indicate it has a 4+4 pins ATX power cable while it only has a 4-pin one. Fortunately, most modern 8-pin motherboards will support a single 4-pin connector.

    Power Supply & Connectors

You'll find that, in general, a 300w power supply is nowhere near what you'll need after populating the box. I have a 630w, and it lopes along just fine, and it has all the connectors you need (want). If not, adapters are available at the nearest computer support store (not including the fly-by-nights).

I run 4 HDD's, a power hungry AMD Athlon, 2 RAM sticks, a RAID card, and a video card with 2 extra fans on 300W.

I run the same # of HDDs, fans, RAM plus a 1Gb video card that requires 450w, RAID, and found that 550w wouldn't cut it. I find that it's easier to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

And this is why 300W will be enough for my needs as well!

You obviously have a very modest video card, however.

Additionally, a pedestral chassis such as the 465W Supermicro SC-742T-465B is roughly three times as expensive as the 300W CSE-731I-300B. This is also a full tower chassis, which may increase monthly colocation fees comparatively to the micro-ATX ones. Finally, it does also add quite a bit of $ in the shipping department. Quite an extra for uneeded extra power, in my case!
