Google chooses Kansas City for ultra-fast Internet

I'm packing my wife and kids as we speak

The year-long wait is over: Google announced Wednesday that it has chosen to deploy its ultra-fast broadband network in Kansas City, Kansas.

Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) will provide broadband Internet access to the city with speeds of about 1 gigabit per second. That's around 100 times faster than what most Americans have available to them today. Google said that the network's speed would be fast enough to download a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes.

My only comment: I pray that Google does not cap the usage!

    Kansas City, Kansas

Nope, not the one accross the river in Missouri that has 2.1M people as well as its very own NFL team. It’s the one with just 145,786 people according to the 2010 census, and is only the third largest city in the Kansas City metro area.

They shouldn't , they pretty much OWN the internet and have enough pipe to just let it run unfiltered.

The real question is whether or not this is really "google" internet or some rebranded crap like Qwest DSL, etc.

Google said the network would offer wire-line service directly to consumers' homes at "a competitive price." The network will be built by Google, but consumers will be able to choose their service provider.
are they just laying the fiber ?

Google building fiber network in Sprint's backyard
But Sprint says that it is not collaborating with Google

Kansas City will have very cheap, & very fast residential & business IP (connectivity). I think eventually they will use it for WIFI as well, and then possibly for their own cell network, all of which will benefit the entire area.

Check out this article as well, maybe it will shed a bit more light on their intentions =)

I've lived here all my life. Why they would run that network in the ghetto is a real head scratcher.

You might want to research the area before you go packing up your wife and kids.
