Hello, I am new to all this I saw lot of data center offers connections like 1 Mbps HA Bandwidth, which they say means 600mb in and out so on a average they say its about 1200mb per month of data transfer now how would you compare that to let say TIME WARNER is offering there WIDEBAND service which offers now 50MB Download and 5MB Upload ? how would they equate to their terms of MBps.
Who gave you those figures? 1Mbps = 324GB over 30 days, with a potential exceed of 1.6TB, when measured as 95th percentile on an open 100Mbps port. Remember case, as it is very important. "B" is Bytes and "b" is bits. Network traffic is measured in bits and scaled as base10; whereas, Bytes usually refer to storage, where it is scaled as base10 on media and base2 on files.
My current provider is charging me $100 per month for 1MBps and I went over 2Mbps and they charge me $150 over of what I was paying therefore I am not sure if the price is high or low, I am with them for like 4 years now and now I see like Iweb.com colo offers they saying for 1 SINGLE 1U they are offering $69 or something for 500GB per month and for $10 extra offering 100mbps port, so I am trying to figure out and see if its high or low.
I'm going to wager that $150 is a pretty steep overage charge per Mbps. I am fairly new to deploying equipment in colo as well (as a customer); however, I have been associated with the industry for the last 12 years. Bandwidth is getting cheap. As such, you should be able to negotiate a 2Mbps commit for less than an overage each quarter.
If you are willing describe the content of your traffic for the board, I'm sure that someone will be willing to give a proper suggestion. I understand the ramifications of moving a server, yet also your plight. There seem to be more hosts than consumers on these boards, so you should be able to find a good solution. Best of luck!
BTW, have you profiled your traffic? Do you have consistent demand around the clock, or are there peak periods on your services?
All we do is we have a ecommerce store which we run on XENSERVERS and our server specs are as follows
PowerEdge R410 2x XEON 2.23GHZ 16GB Ram 1TB Drive - running Citrix XenServer and with in that we have created 4 VM Machines running our web site for cluster and now we need to order same second server so we make sure if one server goes down our site is running our business depends on TOP servers and DC, therefore I need the best solution at reasonable price all we do is sell wholesale clothing online and thats all, we dont do any crazy stuff rather than clothes
