    Cheap, helpful VPS for learning?

I don't need to host anything yet.

Just looking for a cheap VPS platform to learn about it.

Possibly Europe based but not essential.

Nice to have helpful people or at least a helpful forum.

    Any suggestions?

We really need some more details on what exactly you want.

Space and Bandwidth? Managed or Unmanaged? Control Panel?

Let us know so we can assist you further.

IMHO: "Helpful" = Something you need when your cheap, un-managed account has issues outside of your control.

...a platform to learn about it.

Everything you will possibly need to know you can learn here at WHT, by searching Google, and on a site like serverfault.

IMO, a managed account is an option for people who are short on time, lazy, or have no interest in learning to run a server.

    • What else do you need to know? I'll be glad to help.

Yes, lowendbox.com is a very useful website for budget vps accounts. You can also take a look at the vps offer section and i'm sure you can find a good deal.

If it is just for experiments and learning, a (free) vmware server installed on your own PC is the cheapest option i know of. Other than that go to www.lowendbox.com and read... there are many budget offers there. Of course managed VPS usually means more expensive, but even if you are willing to pay more, "managed" does not necessary mean that they will be helping you with your learning curve, managed is usually for managing web hosting related features. I.e. if you are trying to compile something or fix source code yourslef - managed will not help you.

Try lowendbox, they have all the latest and a useful learning site for new people new to vps.

Try a OpenVZ based vps as it has the most guides and information about it.

Space - for data and HTML a few hundred Megabytes is fine - after I have installed the tools - but I'm not sure how much I'd need for those?

Bandwidth - just me playing around so vey little.

Unmanaged and no control panel really as I want to learn.

I'm not clear whether I need OpenVZ or Zen and I'm not sure what memory I need. I mostly work with WordPress - maybe some Drupal but not high traffic.

    Thanks.

well, you know what you need, maybe 256 MB memory good enough for you (no control panel and only hosted for wordpress/drupal) just take a look at lowendbox or vps hosting offer. you have a lot of option, and also reed a couple of review from another member here especially about support ticket rate. i'm pretty sure you don't want to be at hosting service with bad support ticket.

OpenVZ is cheaper.Xen doesn't allow oversold servers.

For a really cheap VPS, I use both BuyVM.net and 123Systems, and they're both decent for the price. And if you decide to get something else later, it could still be useful to keep for VPN, DNS, secondary MX, or a backup server. BuyVM is out of stock right now, though.

I just heard today that 123Systems added a $10/year plan with 128MB guaranteed & burstable RAM, though I'd probably splurge on the $15/year plan and get the extra resources (I have a $21.60/year plan).

Where do you find the 123systems $10 per year plan? I can only find $6.95 per month.

    Well that's worth a punt

Any reason to switch from the default Centos 5.5 32 bit?

That's what I use (Centos 5.5 32 bit). I'd think any distribution you like should be fine, but on a VPS with a small amount of RAM I think 32 bit is better than 64 bit.

    Good point.

Presumably with the SolusVM control panel I can try different ones?

Yes, you can reinstall the OS easily from the SolusVM control panel. Of course you'll lose whatever data you have there when you do that.

One thing to keep in mind with the 128MB OpenVZ plan, is that it doesn't have any extra burstable RAM, so it will effectively behave like a 64MB VPS, which isn't much.
