    The portable datacenter

Hi Web Hosting Talk Lounge, this will be my first post in these parts

Just thought I would post a few pictures of the new portable datacenter we just built. I'm an electrician by trade and not many electricians could care about post power hookups in any DC so I thought I'd share with you guys! Please don't ask too many complicated questions, I only handled hooking up all the power!

Do you have a website on it with more specifications related to the structure and equipments?

It looks impressive but why would someone need a portable datacenter?

APC built one a few years back that was to be sold for upwards of $1.5 million; if I remember correctly.

Sounds cool, but the security on a trailer like this is horrible. Also it would be very unstable in a natural disaster scenario. I don't think this is a very secure/safe solution to expansion.

Probably around ~6 months start to finish. I was only involved for about 3 when they had me come in and do the electrical.

Do you have a website on it with more specifications related to the structure and equipments?
I can't tell you any specs as it was sent off to its new owner and had the equipment installed there. Structurally, it's somewhere around 2,300 square feet, equipped with lighting, emergency lighting, emergency power off, water cooled, complete fire suppression system, UPS/battery bank, temporary 480V plug in the bottom of the trailer and includes a 480V/120V step down transformer in one of the storage compartments.

is the cooling for the servers built in?
Yes, there's probably 4 or 5 cooling cabinets with full plumbing.

It looks impressive but why would someone need a portable datacenter?
Well, I don't have all of the answers because I was just a worker bee on this project but I do know a little. The company I work for, when I'm not doing this, got a call from a hospital in El Centro, and it was actually their permanent DC that incurred a ton of damage and was no longer operational. My company decided to roll out one of these (apparently it was dramatically cheaper, not sure by how much) and started from scratch. We completely stripped the trailer, had drywall and plumbing installed and then we went in with the cabinets and power. I think the portable DC is more practical in an emergency backup situation, and in this case I think it's doing that job until the main DC gets back online.

Sounds cool, but the security on a trailer like this is horrible. Also it would be very unstable in a natural disaster scenario. I don't think this is a very secure/safe solution to expansion.
Actually, we seismically support practically every cabinet in the trailer. We installed bracing all around the inside of the trailer and attached the cabinets about every 5 feet using L brackets and uni-strut. All of the cabinets are bolted to the floor and also have L railing running all along the top. The photos don't show any seismics, these were taken before it was complete. Wish I would have taken some finish product pictures

What happens if that outside electrical cable is cut?

(Backup generators and/or UPS system inside, or no?)

It has a UPS inside, but they'll probably go even further and add an ATS on the line side post service with another generator, just in case.
