Dedicated Server for Download center: I need your opinion

My company want to collect their data in one place instead of using multiple file sharing account in sites like 4shared and megaupload.

the data is PDF, ZIP and MP3 files

i go to Softlayer and i found this offer:

    CPU: Intel Xeon Westmere 5620 - 8x2.40GHz+HT - 1066MHz - 2x12MB
    RAM: 6GB DDR3 1333 ECC
    price: $399.00

and i have a few question i'd like if you answer them please

    1. is this offer good for download center site (the download traffic usually 2TB/month) ? if it not please recommend one for me (under 500$/month) because that is the limit.

    2. in softlayer they offer some OS to select from .. i want a Linux based os that i can access remotely and deal with GUI like gnome for example instead of the terminal (like accessing windows server 2008 from windows 7).

    3. is 1000Mbps port speed is enough for a download center ?

and thank you guys in advance for your help

You could probably go with a significantly cheaper server if all you want to offer are static file downloads. Even an atom can do that. The only thing is that the files have to be legal.

This CPU (Dual E5620) can handle much more than your requirement, not sure about remotely access (may be KVM is good option) and 1000Mbps is also better speed (even 100mbps also work)

for <2tb / mo of traffic, $500 / mo is a way overblown budget. Just about any server should be able to handle it, $100 - $200 / mo is plenty.

    +1
    $500 is way overkill..

You should look for some quad core server for <$200. Most of the sites that offer downloads use Nginx webserver and its not a resource hog like apache. With proper setup a quad core would be more than sufficient to push 2tb/month.
