Just looks like Earth's natural process of change to me. Plates have been smashing in to each other and forcing themselves under each other since the dawn of time.

On the contrary, I'd say it's still quite young. It's been around 4.5 billion years (they estimate) and best estimates suggest it will still be here for another 6-8 billion years (until the sun turns in to a Red Giant). So really, if predictions are to be believed, Earth hasn't even hit middle-age yet.

As for humans abusing nature, I have no doubt we're having an effect and we should do all we can to mitigate that effect but just how much we're effecting it is what really interests me. Afterall, humans in our modern form have only been on Earth for 200,000 years. If my calculations are correct, that means humans have been on Earth for less than 0.0078% of all time. Doesn't that just boggle the mind?!

It gets even more crazy when you consider the percentage of Earth's lifespan that scientists predict life can actually exist. It's a stupidly small percentage. It makes for interesting thought.

albeit that these 'natural occurrences' like this, if happened in greater scale like in the billions of years you speak of, can wipe out entire specie set of the planet and replace it with others.

I really feel the world is coming to an end.
After the earthquake the nuclear reactors have started leaking in Japan.

Also it appears there is a star somewhere in the universe normally bursting every 20 years thats yet to burst after 40 years now. Sure earth will be blown off when the star bursts!

I think trying to predict when earth will "die" will be like trying to predict if your going to die tomorrow you just don't know.

Just like aged people we can predict that they will die at a certain time yet by suprise sometimes they last a further 50+ years...

The things we do to the planet are actually only hurting us, not the planet itself. The planet is much more strong than anyone can imagine. When it gets bad enough, we will die out and Earth will go through a natural process of healing until the next dominant species arrives and repeats the process.

Any you know this how? How do you know that. Based on the big bang theory couldn't we go out with a big bang aswell?

Naturally people everywhere send our best wishes to the brave people of Japan at this terrible time.

We have heard no reports of looting or other types of social disorder because the people of Japan have a strong sense of order and justice. They deserve our respect as well as our compassion.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Japan several times, I know they will bury their dead and rebuild their great nation.

No matter what might happen to the human race, Earth will abide.

The earthquake in Japan is such a sad event. My heart goes out to all the Japanese people and surrounding areas affected. Videos of this disaster shows how quickly things can change. Normal to chaos in minutes.

I am with Jamie on this one. I don't personally see this as a world is ending scenario (based on what has occurred so far, anyway).

I live between the San Andreas fault and the San Jacinto fault in Southern California where the next big one on the US Mainland is predicted to occur any day now. I have lots and lots of food and water in my house at all times, including MRE and canned goods that require no cooking.

The weak point in my earthquake strategy is the very heavy faux spanish tile cement roof on top of my house. If the roof comes down in a big quake I prolly will not need any of the stored food

    Oh well.

Yikes. Do you think that a) the roof might break apart and fall in, or b) the supports for the room might fall away, and the roof would come down?

I'm assuming perhaps "a", but I'm just speculating.

I think the first, a, is likely. The house is 30 years old, and it gets up to 116F here in the summer so it is very, very dry.

The last notable quake here was on Easter Sunday 2010 when the house rocked back and forth because of a quake centered 150 miles southeast of here in Mexico. I was sitting in the Comfy Chair in the TV room and it looked like our 42" plasma TV was going to hit the floor, but it did not.

During another quake about 5 years ago I happened to be in our garage standing in front of a 19" server rack, man was it swaying back and forth.

Earthquakes happen so fast that you really don't have time to be scared until it is all over.

If there were servers on the rack, I think I would subconsciously worry more about the servers than about myself.
