Smile Why hosters use the names of animals in the brand?

    hostmantis, ninjalion, hawkhost, froghost, sharkspace...

  2. #2

    branding

I think that it's for branding purposes - if you can remember the animal and connecti it to the host than they will get their name to stick.
it's a verry affective tactic in the adveratisment industry.

Or it could be just a love for animals?

People choose to agree to disagree on this matter quite a lot. Most say it's just a target for fuzzy warm sales that most animals seem to bring. It is not necessarily the stick of the mascot or the animal that keeps in peoples minds, it is the name.

But to be quite honest with you, I am not sure have followed the Hostgator suite.

    Definitely agree

FrogHost, HawkHost, HostMantis, etc... use animals since you can create pretty amazing mascots that can attract customers

It's all about connecting with your visitors emotionally. For example lets say someone is looking for hosting and comes across 2 websites. 1 with a cute character/mascot of some sort and the other with a server. Which one is he/she likely to remember and go with?

I guess it really depends on the business's target market. Many businesses also work well without a mascot. For example Liquid Web seem to target the more experienced user who is more likely to be interested in specs/support rather than anything else where as HostGator target a general audience.

    ^ Just my opinions

PS: My favorite mascot is from Croc Web

There are animal mascots for everything from elementary schools to pro sports franchises. We've grown up with mascots, so branding your company around a mascot is a natural extension of that.

Its a good way to brand the company and make an image with the name. It's to help the consumer remember where they were and who they're with.

Well, I don't like those particular names. None of those animals are very tasty (although frog legs do come close, but its all about the butter isn't it?) Now, HostGator tastes like chicken, so that's acceptable. Is there a GazelleHosting? They always looked like they could be tasty, lean and probably better than horse.

I little bit ago in another thread, I think someone suggested to pick the host with the strongest animal; or something to that effect.

Too bad hostlion.com doesn't exist, or else that would dominate.

I must ask.. Is this a play on your signature or are you genuinely a strange human?

Yeah, I was joking. My site has a take off on food, and my servers all have food names. Some say I am genuinely strange, so I guess both are true!

With the name you can make a mascot which makes the domain easy to remember. Is easier to remember a lion dressed like a ninja and then "google" about it than a full domain.

I think it's simply good marketing. With how saturated this environment can be, it's great to have something that sticks out. We're professionals trying to dig into the minds of people with very diverse backgrounds and interests at hand. Animals, especially cool ones, are generally accepted across a wide range of people.

I also agree with this. One can also play into the word of the animal. For instance, Cheetah instills fast, so if you owned "cheetahhost", then a potential client might think "wow a fast, efficient host".

Physiologically that is very true! a powerful animal as a mascot shows something along the lines of a powerful provider, For example you see a football team with a cuddly panda bear then you see one with a grizzly, you instantly get the feeling the grizzly's are going to be a stronger, more competitive side.

I am fully aware this isn't always (and rarely is) the case, But in hindsight its a good tactic.

HawkHost owns Froghost, so I'd cut him out from Frog

As for Mantis, his name really doesn't indicate it that way either...
