    try to do: killall -9 apache

    then do: service httpd start

    To fix it permanently, you need to optimize the apache setting as it will happen again...

    That's just ... extremely odd. "host -W 2" should timeout after 2 seconds. And I'm not sure what's even calling it, although I did find a reference to SMF doing that. (Not sure if you're using that, but you could try disabling hostname lookups if you are. Maybe check you're running that latest version.)

  13. #13
    What settings would cause this? I am running Apache 2.2.3

    Code:
    Timeout 120
    KeepAlive Off
    MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
    KeepAliveTimeout 15
    <IfModule prefork.c>
    StartServers       8
    MinSpareServers    5
    MaxSpareServers   20
    ServerLimit      256
    MaxClients       256
    MaxRequestsPerChild  4000
    </IfModule>
    <IfModule worker.c>
    StartServers         2
    MaxClients         150
    MinSpareThreads     25
    MaxSpareThreads     75
    ThreadsPerChild     25
    MaxRequestsPerChild  0
    </IfModule>

    Could it be my hosts dns nameservers?

  15. #15
    Apache won't shell out and call the host command as far as I know, so I assume it's one of the scripts you're running. Are you running SMF?

    And yes, there could be a problem with your hosts dns nameservers.

  16. #16
    Not running SMF, it's a custom script. It does do hostname lookups and reverse dns lookups. Its been running fine for the last month without any changes though. If my hosts dns servers are slow, would that cause it?

  17. #17
    That might cause it, although that 'host' command really should die anyway after 2 seconds (according to it's documentation.)

    You could put a ticket in with your host to ask about any DNS config changes they have made, or look into using different nameservers, such as the google public ones.

    I replaced the nameserver ips in /etc/resolv.conf to the google public ones. And still no go.

  19. #19
    what happens if you run any of those 'host -W 2 xx.xx.xx.xx' from the shell prompt with isp/google nameservers?

    Do you have both outgoing tcp/udp port 53 open? Also, try strace on the pid of the host process to see what it's doing.

    I'm stuck, sorry. No idea why the "host -W 2" command isn't returning a result, and no idea why it's hanging rather than timing out like it's supposed to.

  23. #23
    I think somehow port 53 is closed, but it worked yesterday and I haven't touched it. This is going beyond my linux knowledge now, how do I verify port 53 is open? telnet localhost 53 failed.

    A few ideas;

    Check you dont have the "Listen 80" directive in 2 files
    E.g /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
    /etc/httpd/conf.d/system-config-httpd.conf

    Restart BIND

    Comment out "Listen :443" in httpd.conf

    Check theres no other webservers running, even if its not apache TUX might be running, thats a webserver usually found in redhat editions and runs by default

    Just a few ideas that could fix your problem, let me know if you have any luck

    You could also try:
    Code:
    iptables -L
    and see if 53 is blocked.

    Remember DNS runs on 53 UDP, not TCP (unless you're doing something funny), so make sure of both, like UNIXy said. You can't telnet to port 53, for instance, because telnet is a TCP protocol.

    Hmm. What does your /etc/resolv.conf file look like?

    Can you ping the nameservers that are listed there?

    Try this for about 10 seconds and then ctrl-z & kill the job (jobs and kill %x). Make the trace dump available

    strace -vvv -s 1024 -o /tmp/trace dig google.com

    What happens when you run the strace on the host command?

    Code:
