    Question iWeb being sold

    http://www.cnw.ca/en/releases/archiv.../04/c8328.html

Looks like some "FUND" wants to buy iWeb. Who can that "FUND" be ? competitor ? At least some one in the computer industrie ?

Any one with inside scoops? I want to know since I have server there.

funds are things that are used to take control of or undo anything a bigger interest does not like. even if immediate participants can be made out, they generally act as proxies on behalf of bigger interests.

a good example may be found in softlayer and theplanet being bought and merged by the same fund, and then suddenly finding a new enthusiasm and diligence in enforcing dmca/copyright stuff. also, the curious case of simplecdn is another illustration as far as can be observed.

in short - a fund is just a tool for dirty kind of capitalism.

Read above - no doubt a coverup for a bigger group.

At least it is not EIG buying another hosting entity.

this absurd sudden interest of investment circles of hosting outfits targeting small businesses / people is quite curious.

indeed some of these outfits like ev1servers, theplanet, softlayer were big, and they are big. but, their size is not as big as what goes as investment in the financial circles that run about in the u.s.

and its not a perilous situation either - at any given point, a big boy like google etc may start offering hosting which would be much more accessible and easy than what normal web hosting (and dedicated, vps etc) is offering. google already serves google pages. with some effort google can make it a service that could cover most of the website needs that we see on the web. and then there is also the question of cloud. amazon etc are already offering such cloud options that can serve websites out of a cloud.

so, in the wake of all these, i am wondering why the sudden interest in web hosting on part of investment funds.

Hmm. Previously, some of the deals seemed to only be from within the industry, such as when Verio purchased digitalNation (the dedicated server company) for $100 million cash.

Perhaps now it is simply that outside companies or funds are recognizing hosting companies as truly valid and viable. I think it comes with the increased respect for hosting companies as valid business entities.

i wonder. any serious investment source would easily see that web is consolidating at the hands of the big. be it isps, be it big sources like google, facebook etc.

    Softlayer/tp isn't really global yet.

i mean big. how big now are they, in regard to total websites hosted (including what those who rent servers from them are hosting as shared etc) ? or, the traffic served ?

I think they must be around the 70k server mark as a whole now, could be more/less - not too sure.

Kind of outdated, but in 2009 GoDaddy was #1 in terms of hostnames... then The Planet.
